POSITION TITLE: News Writer & Communications Strategist COMPENSATION RANGE: 55,000.00 - 55,000.00 USD per year EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Professional Administrative DEPARTMENT: Public Relations TARGET HIRE DATE: 11/22/2024 BENEFITS: UNC's Career Hub To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by 11:59pm (MT) on 10/29/2024. Position Summary: This position exists to elevate the university's profile primarily by producing compelling stories for internal and external audiences through a variety of traditional and digital platforms. The position serves as editor of the UNC's official community newsletters for employees and students, assists the director of News and Public Relations in generating media interest, produces news and features for the university's website, UNC Magazine and other publications, and helps to manage the news database and the university news website. Job Duties: 65% - Conduct interviews and research to write press releases, news, full-length features and other compelling stories in multimedia formats that strengthen the brand and reputation of the university for UNC's news website, UNC Magazine, newsletters and other key university publications. 10% - Collaborate regularly with other university communication colleagues to identify and create, or help support the creation of, potential newsworthy story ideas for both internal and external audiences. Assist in the development of communication strategies to integrate and leverage editorial content across multiple channels (website, social media, newsletters, media distribution, etc.) to support the communication and public relations strategies of the university. 10% - Manage and edit one or more of the university's official newsletters. 5% - Monitor the news cycle for opportunities to pitch UNC's faculty and staff experts for interviews or contribute op-eds on timely, trending topics. 5% - Proofread and copy edit editorial, marketing, public relations and multimedia content for a variety of platforms (news, website, social media, emails, newsletters, marketing collateral, video scripts, etc.) 5% - Assist with managing the university's news website, laying out and posting editorial content, videos, photos and other multimedia assets. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, communication or related field At a minimum, the person in this position should have three to five years' experience in producing compelling news and feature stories, writing press releases and other newsletter and web content. This person should also have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and have an understanding of the 24-hour news media cycle and the types of stories that appeal to journalists. This position is contingent on funding from the Colorado State Legislature, approval by the Board of Trustees, and subject to the policies and regulations of the University of Northern Colorado. Clery Act In compliance with the Clery Act, the most recent University of Northern Colorado Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report is available online. A paper copy can be requested at the UNC Police Department. This report contains crime statistics and policy statements related to safety, conduct processes and Title IX investigations.
