Department: HEALTH Pay: $24.43 per hour. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, May work more than 40 hours/week, including evenings and weekends The Disease Investigator-Vaccine Preventable Diseases is a grant-funded position that supports the Sedgwick County Health Department and its mission by investigating and monitoring notifiable diseases and conditions, focusing on vaccine preventable diseases (ex. varicella, pertussis, and hepatitis A), to control the spread of disease and protect the public from health threats. This position is responsible for conducting disease investigations of vaccine preventable diseases; educating and collaborating with health partners; and monitoring and reporting on disease data. The employee is exposed to hostile or emotionally charged individuals. The employee is exposed to sensitive and potentially disturbing content related to serious health concerns. Employee may deploy to the field as a responder or in a leadership position during public health emergencies. Conduct disease investigations of vaccine preventable diseases per established state and local guidelines * Perform timely investigations of individual reports of disease. This includes making phone calls and visiting homes and businesses * Investigate possible disease sources by interviewing patients and contacts and reviewing associated information in order to locate the source and all related cases * Accurately and thoroughly complete notifiable disease investigations, including accurate documentation of work * Assist with outbreak investigations Educate and collaborate with health partners in controlling the spread of disease * Educate health partners to improve disease reporting, including school nurses * Work with internal SCHD staff to prevent disease spread * Provide recommendations regarding the control of outbreaks based on state and federal guidelines * Drive to various locations to provide on-site guidance and recommendations * Maintain and improve technical competence necessary to serve as a subject matter expert, including attending workshops, trainings, exercises, and conferences. Monitor and report on disease data * Collect and analyze data and prepare reports on investigative activities and findings with support from and review by supervisor * Maintain school illness reporting system and produce reports * Assist with developing communication messages for the public based on data analysis and health literacy standards * Report activities to SCHD or KDHE as required or requested * Present communicable disease education and presentations to local health partners. Minimum Qualifications: One three credit hour class -or- six months of experience in data analytics or epidemiology. One year of work experience providing customer service to the public AND one of the qualifications below: * Two years of work experience in counseling or a biological or health science * Two years of science teaching experience in accredited K-12 or college education setting * Associate's degree in communications or a medical- or science-related or education-based field Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment. One year of experience with Microsoft Suite or similar system. Preferred Qualifications: One year of work experience in a public health department or healthcare setting. One year of work experience in infectious diseases or performing disease investigations. One year of work experience with data entry and data management. Bachelor's degree in public health or in a health- or science-related or other related field.
