The Education Technologies Office (ETO) in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Computer Engineer. This position Is focused on the day-to-day operations of technology systems at the school and will work closely with customers, center administrators and technicians to ensure a high level of customer experience. This role requires a strategic thinker to stay ahead of the evolving technological needs and provides constant vigilance to system security by ensuring devices are maintained in accordance with UVA policies and procedures. The Computer Engineer will report to the Systems and Security manager and be a member of a small, highly effective team. Beyond the team, the Computer Engineer will work with center administrators and key staff to ensure the equipment we provide and manage is meeting their needs and to monitor its lifecycle performance. This position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Responsibilities include: * KACE: Perform system software upgrades. Manage development and test servers. Write, test and run SQL reports. * Cisco and Dell Switches: Perform configuration, firmware upgrades and test the running environment. * Windows Server: Manage and update Windows Server 2016, 2019, and 2022. * SQL/MySQL: Use MySQL Workbench and SQL Server Management Studio and other tools to traverse and write queries against SQL/MySQL databases. * Backups and alerts: Write backup scripts, use PowerShell and monitoring software to maintain the health of backup systems. * Network: Test network connections and firewalls for configuration and security using a variety of tools across Windows, OSX and Linux. * Hardware procurement: Assist with purchasing PC and Apple hardware to fit the functions of the user using university procedures. * Asset Management: Take inventory of all SEHD devices and communicate with users and departmental administrator on lifecycle of assets under their care. * Surplus: Remove obsolete equipment from service and ensure secure disposal. * Camera Systems: Manage and troubleshoot POE+ connections and work with software engineers to upgrade camera systems and resolve issues. * Management and upgrades to the SEHD Printers and Papercut Server. * Manage ETO Projects as required. Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline Experience: At least one year of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Preferred Qualifications * Possess thorough knowledge of information technology concepts and terminology; desktop OS and supported software applications; network fundamentals; IP protocol and fundamental troubleshooting techniques. * Server, Cluster and SAN Hardware: Proficient in iDRAC and LOM management. Able to start repair and upgrade offsite systems. * Server Software Widows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016. Appliance based Linux. * Windows OS: Proficient in the operation and troubleshooting of the current windows environment and common windows programs. * Apple OS: Proficient in the operation and troubleshooting of the current OSX environment and common programs. * Network: Able to test network connections and configure firewalls security using a variety of tools across Windows, OSX and Linux. * IIS: Able to check basic settings in IIS, verify, and update publishing point status and troubleshoot basic issues with video streaming. * AD Tools: Proficient with RSAT. Ability to manage computer accounts and determine the status and permissions of users and resources. * Microsoft Office: Proficient in MS office applications including the use of Teams and has Strong Excel knowledge. * Camera Systems: Familiarity with Axis cameras and VALT Software preferred. * KACE: Prior experience with KACE System Management preferred. * CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ Anticipated salary range: $70,000 to $75,000, commensurate with education and experience.
