County of Madera is establishing a list of qualified applicants for this position. Applications will be accepted continuously until otherwise noted and the list will be used to fill current vacancies in this classification.    Under direction, to perform a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on emergency response apparatus; and to do related work as required. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Exercises technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.  Performs a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on emergency response apparatus including fire apparatus, pumping apparatus, areal apparatus, and rescue apparatus; determines the extent of necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts transmissions, differentials, clutches, and engines; tunes-up engines; replaces ignition parts, and cleans and adjusts carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other parts and equipment; repairs and replaces components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; performs front-end alignments and repairs; repairs and adjusts generators, water pumps, and air compressors; performs welding work to adapt and fabricate parts and equipment; works on hydraulic lines and systems; performs specialized repairs on air brakes, diesel engines, and drive mechanisms; carries our preventive maintenance programs; makes field and emergency repairs as necessary; maintains records on time and materials used; road tests repaired equipment; installs emergency warning equipment and radios; replaces flat tires; assists with cleaning the shop and work areas; steam cleans equipment and parts; supervises assigned staff in performing preventative maintenance and repairs on department equipment. OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.  Knowledge of: * Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of emergency response apparatus including fire apparatus, pumping apparatus, areal apparatus, and rescue apparatus. * Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations and their effect on fire apparatus. * Cost estimate review, vendor bid process preparation and review, and vendor warranties. * Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding. * Operation and care of internal combustion and diesel engines and components. * Principles and methods of preventative maintenance. * Safe work practices. Skill to: * Operate a variety of tools and machinery used in the repair and fabrication of fire apparatus and automotive equipment. * Operate all fire apparatus for performance of inspections and testing. * Operate a variety of hand and power tools in heavy equipment inspection, testing, and repair work. * Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to: * Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical problems and determine corrective procedures. * Diagnose mechanical problems and determine corrective procedures. Estimate time and materials needed for repair work. * Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. * Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Experience: One (1) year of responsible work experience performing skilled maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in heavy equipment maintenance and repair. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 25 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.    The application review process will include screening to ensure applications are complete and meet all minimum qualifications.  In addition to the application, the applicant is required to complete the Supplemental Questions to further evaluate their education, training and experience relative to the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications, applicants may be scheduled for  the assessment listed below.  Passing score is 70% out of 100%. Candidates who attain ranking on an eligible list and are involuntarily called to active duty may be considered for eligibility reinstatement upon their return.   PLACEMENT ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST: The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final score on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight.  The names of two or more eligibles having final ratings which are identical shall be grouped on the eligible list as tie names with equal rank for certification and appointment purposes.   Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of six (6) months or one (1) year, unless otherwise determined by the Director pursuant to section 6-4 (b) and may be extended for up to an additional year by the Commission.     PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment with the County of Madera, a candidate must submit to a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, and related follow up testing as necessary. Designated classifications* are also subject to a medical examination, which includes a review of medical history. TB screenings and medical exams are administered by the Madera County Public Health Department and/or health care professional designated by the County.   Designated classifications required to submit to an employment medical examination generally include those that are physical in nature or as may be required by law.
