JOB TITLE: Police Sergeant *INTERNAL RECRUITMENT ONLY* DEPARTMENT: Police DIVISION: Commissioned SALARY: $32.34 hourly, ($67,284.84 annually) CLOSING DATE: September 30, 2024 Job Summary Supervises daily work activities of commissioned officers and civilians assigned to a specific shift or division. Ensures officers and civilians comply with Department policies and regulations. Coordinates the use of staff and resources in the department. Assists in criminal investigations. Job Scope Plans, organizes, and controls the work of assigned employees. Direct supervisory responsibilities. Some budgetary responsibilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Responds to all major calls and directs the activities of subordinates. Responds to routine calls, as necessary. * Determines needs for further training of officers. * Assists employees with problem resolution. * Evaluates and reviews reports and work of subordinates. Counsels on job performance. * Provides information on daily workings of the agency. * Receives citizen complaints and resolves when possible. * Reviews and follows up on case assignments. * Assists in case problem solving and investigative work. * Assists officers at crime scenes. Other Duties and Responsibilities * Conducts roll call and roll call training * Inspects officers and equipment daily * Performs all other related duties as assigned. Employee Behavior and Conduct City employees shall conduct themselves in a professional manner and shall exhibit and extend such professional conduct appropriate for the circumstances to those with whom they come into contact both internally and externally during the performance of their duties. Examples of professional conduct include, but are not limited to, being communicative, informative, fair, honest, and respectful. Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Minimum of five years departmental seniority required. * Firearms qualification required. * Valid driver's license required. * Skills in problem solving, supervision and management, report writing, handling weapons, interacting with people; and written and oral communications. * Knowledge of criminal, constitutional, and traffic law. * Knowledge of City, Federal and State laws. * Knowledge of leadership methods and department policies and procedures. * Must be able to establish and achieve reasonable goals. * Work is performed under stressful situations; requires physical strength and ability to restrain others. * Ability to exercise good judgment under stress and lead and motivate subordinates. * Ability to deal effectively with the public, fulfill duties of subordinates, and assume command in the absence of ranking officers. * Daily operation of police vehicles. * Must be able to utilize various computer programs and computerized equipment. * Certified Missouri peace officer. Materials and Equipment Directly Used Operates police vehicles, handles police weapons such as sidearm, shotgun, handcuffs, pepper mace, baton and other related equipment. Frequent operation of computers, telephone and other related office management or investigative tools and equipment. Drives police vehicle. Working Environment/Physical Requirements Exposure to both inside office environment and all extreme weather conditions. Exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, loud noise, fumes and sudden temperature change. Physical activity includes prolonged sitting. Involves standing, walking, bending, reaching, exercise of physical restraint and driving. Exposed to highly intense situations and physical activity. Extended sitting while conducting field operations. Occasional running. Intense physical contact occasionally occurs while making arrests. Must be able to lift 10 to 20 pounds frequently. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in criminal justice desirable. Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
