Chemist 4 Supervisor, Newborn Screening   This is a permanent position that requires working onsite at our Public Health Laboratory located in Shoreline, WA.   The Washington State Department of Health, Office of Newborn Screening (NBS) tests all infants born in Washington for a number of rare but treatable disorders using a dried blood spot specimen. Infants with these disorders usually appear healthy at birth and, without screening, the disorders are not likely to be detected and treated in time to prevent death or severe disability. Newborn screening is one of the most successful public health initiatives in the USA. Babies with these disorders can have serious health problems, but screening and early treatment can help our youngest Washingtonians grow up healthy!   What You Will Do: As the Chemist 4 Supervisor in our Newborn Screening Laboratory, you play a critical role in safeguarding the health of infants across Washington State. You'll oversee a team of skilled laboratory professionals conducting vital tests on newborn blood samples to detect heritable disorders early on. Your leadership ensures the smooth operation of the lab, from assigning and scheduling staff to resolving complex test results. With your technical expertise and supervisory skills, you'll help ensure that every test is accurate and timely, contributing directly to the protection of newborns.   In this role, you'll collaborate closely with the Newborn Screening Office Director and other key leaders to shape program policies and improve lab processes. You'll be responsible for managing lab resources, equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Whether you're coordinating lab activities or improving operational efficiency, you'll be an essential part of a dedicated team working to give infants the healthiest start in life.   Expectations and Responsibilities: * Maintain lab records, procedures, and manuals, ensuring staff follow protocols and preparing for regulatory inspections. * Collaborate with the Office Director and team on method development, analyzing results, and approving necessary changes. * Manage lab supplies, negotiate with vendors for deliveries and service contracts, and ensure equipment is properly maintained. * Provide technical guidance, troubleshoot instruments, and oversee lab staff as needed. * Assign and schedule lab staff to meet workload needs, providing cross-training and rotation opportunities for professional growth. * Supervise lab employees, handling HR tasks like evaluations, training, and addressing performance issues. Track attendance and manage leave. * Review and approve unusual test results, working with the QA Coordinator to resolve complex cases and ensuring protocols are followed. Set up retests when necessary. * Be prepared to respond to public health emergencies and participate in training and real events as part of DOH's First Response team. This position requires working onsite and in-person at our Public Health Laboratory located in Shoreline, WA.   What We're looking for - Required Qualifications: We value all relevant experience, whether paid or unpaid and your diverse experiences can make a difference in this role. To be considered for this position, you must meet one of the required qualification options listed.   Lived experience option: * Option 1: 5 or more years of experience as a laboratory lead AND 5 or more years of laboratory bench experience in a medical, clinical, biochemical laboratory, including interpreting test results.  Education + experience options: A degree with major study in microbiology, pathobiology, genetics, biology, biochemistry, medical technology, or closely allied field. College curriculum must include at least 20 semester or 30 quarter credit hours in microbiology and/or chemistry.   * Option 2: Bachelor's degree AND 3 or more years of experience as a laboratory lead plus 3 or more years of laboratory bench experience in a medical, clinical, biochemical laboratory, including interpreting test results.   * Option 3: Master's degree AND 3 or more years of experience as a laboratory lead plus 2 or more years of laboratory bench experience in a medical, clinical, biochemical laboratory, including interpreting test results.  Preferred Qualifications: The qualifications below are what would make you a strong fit for this role. You'll handle dried blood and occasionally whole blood, as well as various lab chemicals. * Schedule: You'll work 8 hours a day, five days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Flexibility is needed for on-call duties or additional hours. The lab operates Monday through Saturday and most holidays, so you may need to cover Sunday and holiday shifts occasionally. You may also need to work outside regular hours for emergencies or outbreaks. * Travel Requirements: Occasional travel is required, including overnight trips and possibly out-of-state travel. You may need to drive a state or privately-owned vehicle for work or arrange alternative transportation. * Tools and Equipment: You'll use lab equipment like incubators, refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, pipettes, mass spectrometers, and PCR platforms, as well as personal protective equipment and office equipment such as computers and printers. * Customer Interactions: Direct interactions with customers are infrequent, but you'll routinely interact with vendors. * Other: The work environment can be noisy, stressful, and fast-paced.
