Job Description: The Wall Street Journal photo editor/photographer internship is an opportunity primarily for college juniors to work in our award-winning newsroom. Seniors and graduate students enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline are also eligible to apply. This internship will be a hybrid photo editor/photographer role, with roughly 1-2 days in the field per week, and the remaining days performing daily photo editing and department production assistance. In your role as intern photographer, you will go on news and portraiture assignments for the WSJ team, ranging from business coverage to breaking news to features. You will be required to think creatively and produce visual narratives for complex stories, following your brief in detail and filing quickly with accurate captions. As intern photo editor, you will produce and build visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop. You will be expected to deliver photos for breaking news and live news coverage, conduct social media research, and may be expected to assign freelance work. You will be building stories in our CMS, conducting research using various photo wire agencies. You will collaborate with other photo editors, visual colleagues, reporters and editors across the newsroom. You will also have the opportunity to pitch visually innovative and original approaches to stories and to collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content. You should have a familiarity with photo editing programs, such as Photoshop and Photo Mechanic, and you must have evident knowledge of photojournalism and documentary photography. Social media savviness, from X to Instagram, is a must. Basic coding skills are a plus. You should be a self-starter who understands the needs of our audience across multiple platforms and is able to work independently under deadline pressure. Dedication to high journalistic standards and excellent writing and reporting skills are required. A demonstrated interest in business reporting is a plus, though prior business/finance reporting experience is not required. You should have completed at least one prior reporting internship with another professional media organization or published exceptional work with a campus news outlet or as a freelancer. HOW TO APPLY: Please upload one PDF document (max. 5MB); You may upload a second PDF with your work examples if the files are large. Your application document should contain: * A cover letter. * Your résumé. * Three annotated examples of your photo editing work, detailing what your role was for each project. * A photography portfolio of 12-15 images. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024 at midnight Eastern time. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. TIMING: 10 weeks between June and August. Only finalists will be contacted. We will review applications on a rolling basis and strive to make selections by the end of January. MORE QUESTIONS?
