The Writer/Editor III plays a key role in planning, researching, writing, and editing a broad range of documents and web-based materials to support multiple internal and external clients and in meeting JBS's high standards for substantive editing. Critical functions for this position include writing for a range of audiences; editing for clarity, sense, grammar, plain language, and style guide adherence; fact-checking; working as part of a team; meeting deadlines; and collaborating with content experts, other consultants, and project staff. They are instrumental in ensuring that all products represent the voice of the client and that each has "one-voice" consistency, as well as tailoring the language and structures of content to diverse audiences. * This is an on call/as needed position without benefits.* ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Copyedits, substantively edits, and oversees quality control reviews for a range of project deliverables, corporate communications, proposals, etc.; reviews and revises products to reflect plain language and accessibility principles * Conducts research to support content outlines and ongoing content development; compiles general bibliographies, substantive annotated bibliographies, and well-cited literature reviews to serve as the foundation for evidence-based content development * Compiles substantive feedback from clients, reviewers, subject matter experts, and other contributors; organizes feedback and incorporates it in revised drafts; and reviews updated content drafts to confirm feedback has been incorporated accurately * Edits/revises content on numerous project-specific subjects (e.g., health, social sciences, criminal justice, child welfare) for myriad audiences (e.g., state/federal policymakers, social science and health professionals, criminal justice and child welfare professionals, patients/clients and families, researchers and academics, the public) * Develops, updates, and expands project and corporate style guides; leads the development of product-specific style sheets * Oversees preparation of content for various stages of internal and external review * Leads discussions around process improvement, quality improvement, workflow efficiencies, and editorial and content development best practices; develops and maintains project-tailored standard operating procedures and process checklists * Engages in and provides junior staff with guidance about content development, best practices in writing and editing evidence-based content for diverse target audiences, and new options and innovations in content tracking and management * Collaborates with creative, multimedia, web, and production teams, as needed, to develop well-formatted, accessible, engaging content in a range of formats suitable for dissemination via diverse channels * Communicates with internal and external clients to develop appropriate content and to offer creative, evidence-informed recommendations for product topics, formats, and target audiences; attends client meetings and brainstorming sessions * Gives status updates on writing/editing progress to supervisor, project director, and clients * Provides editorial consultation across projects and impact/functional centers, as needed * May supervise and mentor junior members of the writing/editing team MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education: * Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in English, communications, comparative literature, journalism, or a public-health-related field and 10+ years of experience * Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in English, communications, comparative literature, journalism, or a public-health-related field and 12+ years of experience Experience: * Demonstrated experience in writing and editing skills, as proven through work samples showcasing content across a range of formats and publication channels * Experience successfully applying writing/editing skills in specific project content areas (e.g., public health, social science, behavioral health, child welfare) * Proficiency in identifying, reviewing, and critiquing topic-specific research literature (including familiarity with common academic/scientific literature search databases); ability to assess quality of evidence/recommendations and to synthesize findings into new or updated content with minimal support, as needed, from senior writer/editors, science librarians, and/or subject matter experts Knowledge: * Knowledge/experience leading collaboration among writer/editors and content strategists, creative and multimedia content specialists, production teams, and subject matter experts * Superior command of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax; proven ability to apply this knowledge in alignment with common industry style guides (e.g., AMA, AP, APA, Chicago, GPO); exceptional ability to rewrite in plain language and parallel construction; expertise in federal plain language guidelines and adaptation of content to suit the needs of diverse audiences Soft Skills: * Ability to handle multiple projects at once, while maintaining exceptional quality standards and aligning with project and/or industry standard editorial guidelines and best practices * Capability in providing and receiving feedback courteously and professionally * Excellent coordination and multitasking skills, with consistent ability to accurately estimate, set, and meet deadlines; ability to mentor junior staff in developing such skills * Ability to fact-check and provide constructive feedback to writer/editors * Superb organizational skills and ability to mentor junior staff in developing such skills * Excellent oral communication skills Language: English fluency (oral and written) Software Proficiency: * Proficiency in the full Microsoft Office suite of applications, especially MS Word; proficiency with the Styles function in Word * Working knowledge of content revision functions in Adobe Acrobat * Proficiency in plagiarism detection platforms/software LOCATION: Remote Physical Requirements: * Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or computer workstation. * Regularly uses a computer, keyboard, and mouse. * Normal or corrected vision to read documents, view computer screens, and perform tasks that require visual accuracy. * Ability to hear and understand spoken information in person and over the phone. * Minimal lifting and carrying may be required, typically light office supplies or documents. * Ability to move within the office environment to access equipment, files, and interact with colleagues. * Ability to handle occasional stress related to deadlines, workloads, or challenging tasks.
