JOB DESCRIPTIONJob Title: Assistant Planner Department: Community & Economic Development Bureau: Planning and Zoning Paygrade: S06; Non Exempt Nature of Work: Performs a variety of administrative, technical and entry level planning functions. Works closely with the Planning and Zoning staff and with the public to provide assistance on planning and zoning applications. Works closely with the Planning Commission, other departments, and the public to collect and distribute Land Development and Subdivision Applications. Essential Duties: Provides technical and administrative support to the Planning Bureau and Planning Commission. Task includes accepting and processing all Major and Minor Land Development Applications, Subdivision Applications, and other related applications. Prepares all agendas, back-up materials, and comment letters for the Planning Commission. Other related responsibilities include assembling all meeting materials and completing resident notification. Research and compiles information on property history, application history, application statuses, etc. Attends public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate. Assists with the preparation of staff reports including data collection, research and relevant property history. Coordinates with applicants, staff, and other departments on all Planning Commission and Land Development required follow-up (i.e. Land Development Agreements). Serves as a Plans Coordinator for all EnerGov Planning applications. Assists in managing files on land development for efficient storage and retrieval. Prepare minutes of meetings of committees served by the Planning Bureau. Acts as liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans. Provides quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to City customers, citizens and internal departments. SUPERVISION GIVEN/RECEIVED General supervision is received from the Chief Planner. No supervision exercised. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS An Associate's Degree in Urban planning, Architecture, Construction Management, Social Sciences or related field and one (1) year experience; or a Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Bachelor's Degree preferred. KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of City planning and community development. Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection. Knowledge of effective writing techniques. Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations. Knowledge or ability to learn EnerGov. Knowledge/ experience with GIS preferred. SKILL REQUIREMENTS Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft 365. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, other agencies, other jurisdictions and the general public. Ability to communicate ideas both in writing and orally. Ability to work with computers, proficient with standard data and word processing software.
