As the Associate Manager, Chemist you will be expected to lead formulation activities to support white space innovation and projects here at SC Johnson. You will develop formulations that will drive new products, line extensions, and lead technology advancements resulting in consumer preferred benefits. You will guide the team through the NPD Process, ensuring deliverables, success criteria, timing, and risk/mitigation profile is clear and executed. You will have accountability for identification of risks and obstacles, initiating trade-off and escalation discussions. You will drive project delivery from idea to commercialization to deliver business commitments. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Demonstrate SCJ Success Drivers and establish a "Mindset to Win" Culture * Demonstrate the ability to pivot between working on the front-end of a project operating in ambiguity to delivering in the execution phase * Work as a member of a fast-paced cross-functional project team to create new products or product improvements that address consumer user criteria, needs, and insights * Contribute to the development of innovative new products with technical curiosity and bring novel, disruptive solutions to market * Utilize available internal and external resources to identify and investigate applicable new technologies/raw materials and recommend use applications to support innovation pipelines (e.g. by searching scientific and patent literature, outside contacts, suppliers, etc.) and secondary sourcing options * Understand IP landscape of products they are responsible for; monitors competitive IP and provides insight as to competitive threats * Files invention disclosures on work with legal and works with patent attorneys to develop and submit patent applications * Model strong R&D functional skills, including appropriate skills in effective communication, financial acumen, integrated risk management, project management, quality, robustness, regulation & safety, scientific rigor, and technical curiosity * Develop formulations to meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping * Utilize knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and statistics to efficiently select and recommend appropriate course(s) of action to meet business needs * Understand the functional properties, proper use, environmental impact of ingredients, and performance attributes of product formulations * Work closely with cross functional team members on ensuring quality scale up of laboratory formulas, including supporting pilot batches and first production runs * Input data requirements in SAP with accuracy and attention to detail * Follow good laboratory practices, all safety regulations, and maintain a clean, orderly work area * Conduct performance testing to support claims substantiation/product demos * Prepare samples and track documentation for micro-challenge, toxicological, clinical, and performance testing. Coordinate outside testing with appropriate resources as required * Monitor stability testing, including first production run stabilities, and maintain records thoroughly and concisely compliant with good laboratory practices * Optimize formulation ingredients to manage costs and availability of ingredients for intended function * Prepare quotation packets as specified for new products and submit to outside fillers to include but not limited to formulation, mixing procedures, color, odor, and appearance standards and specified raw materials * Review trade publications and other industry news sources for raw material information, regulatory updates, and educational opportunities * Obtain an awareness of regulatory and sustainability issues applicable to product launches REQUIRED EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING * Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or other related science and a minimum of 6 years of experience in a formulation role with a strong background in formulation development based on consumer insights or master's degree with at least 3 years relevant work experience in a formulation role with a strong background in formulation development based on consumer insights. * Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States PREFERRED EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS * Possess an understanding of regulatory processes, (i.e., EPA registrations) * Demonstrated understanding of the US Patent system and ability to produce inventions of value to the business unit * Knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various formulation and delivery system technologies related to products (e.g., emulsion chemistry, gel formulation, polymer chemistry, reaction products, surfactants, solvents, builders) * Understanding of the functional properties, proper use, and the environmental impact of ingredients * Provide innovative ideas and knowledge with a high degree of integrity, speed, and a results-oriented approach. * Explore new technologies and materials, which may have application for product lines and ability to design experiments to evaluate the performance attributes of products * Scientific curiosity and the ability to solve technical problems related to formulation and manufacturing * Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate accurately and concisely to multiple levels within the company * Proficient computer skills; will be required to become competent in the use of PLM (SAP based product management system) JOB REQUIREMENTS * 0-10% travel * Ability to lift 10 - 40 pounds * Remote work is available once per week for eligible employees * This role is not eligible for relocation BENEFITS AND PERKS SC Johnson's total compensation packages are at or above industry levels.
