The Biology Department at Notre Dame of Maryland University is seeking a highly motivated and organized Laboratory Manager to oversee the daily operations of our teaching and research laboratories. The ideal candidate will ensure the smooth functioning of lab activities, maintain equipment, manage inventory, and support faculty and students in their laboratory work. Essential functions include but are not limited to: * Laboratory Operations: * Oversee the day-to-day operations of teaching and research laboratories, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and proper lab protocols.\ * Typical duties: Solution calculation and preparation, media preparation, microbial culture maintenance, sterile technique, lab practical set up, and autoclaving use * Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment * The laboratory manager is responsible for chemical hygiene and waste (chemical and biological) management and will maintain current knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to these duties. * Equipment and Inventory Management: * Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring all tools are in proper working order. * Manage inventory of lab supplies, including ordering, stocking, and tracking usage. * Coordinate the repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment as needed. * Support for Faculty and Students: * Assist faculty with the preparation and setup of laboratory exercises for undergraduate courses. * Provide training and support to students and faculty on the proper use of laboratory equipment and techniques. * Supervise and mentor student assistants working in the laboratories. * Administrative Duties: * Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory activities. * Maintain accurate records of lab activities, equipment maintenance, and inventory. * Maintain the department budget under the supervision of the Department Chair. * Ensure all safety documentation and certifications are up-to-date and accessible. * Collaborate with University staff. * Collaboration and Communication: * Work closely with faculty to develop and improve laboratory curriculum and research projects. * Serve as a point of contact for external vendors and service providers. * Communicate effectively with faculty and students to ensure efficient laboratory operations. * Communicate effectively with University staff. Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred. * Minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in an academic environment. * Strong organizational and multitasking skills, demonstrating the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ensuring effective teamwork and collaboration with faculty, students, and staff. * Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and regulations in biological science, ensuring a safe and compliant working environment. * Proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment and software in biological science, maintaining high standards of quality and performance. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving. * Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and an awareness of the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds. * Dependability and strong work ethic, with the ability to complete tasks and assignments reliably and efficiently. * Excellent judgment and decision-making skills, maintaining confidentiality and prioritizing tasks effectively. * Computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, and Teams platforms, as well as email Physical Requirements: * Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, squat, use fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing 10-20 pounds up to 40 pounds. * Full time, Monday through Friday with some early evening hours throughout the semester.
