TOWN OF APEX invites applications for the position of: LSE Fire Inspector Assistant ABOUT THIS POSITION: EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $28.00/hr WORK LOCATION: 315 West Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502 SCHEDULE: 16 hours a week, Monday - Friday POSTING CLOSING DATE: 10/14/2024 WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: An employee in this class performs regular fire inspections of commercial and retail establishments, schools, and residences as required under State laws and Town ordinances. Considerable public contact requires that the employee exhibit tact and diplomacy in seeking compliance with fire laws, codes, rules and regulations. The employee is subject to hazards associated with fire inspection and administrative work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold and hot weather, and exposure to various hazards such as high heat, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places. Employee is also exposed to atmospheric conditions and blood borne pathogens, may be required to wear a respirator and work in close quarters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work performed. This position reports to the Fire Marshal. A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS: * Conducts fire inspections of businesses, commercial buildings, schools, day care centers, nursing homes and places of public assembly for existing or potential fire hazards; enforces fire section of state building code and NFPA codes. * Conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that deficient conditions are corrected; prepares and submits reports of deficiencies. * Answers questions from private citizens, contractors and builders; researches manuals and code books for solutions and responses to violations; responds to complaints. * Maintains accurate inspection records; enters inspection information in computer. * Performs related duties as required. WHAT YOU'LL NEED: High school diploma or GED. Possess certifications of completion for or have reciprocity documentation for: * NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 * Fire Inspector I * Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license WITH... * Considerable knowledge of departmental rules and regulations. * Skill in collaborative conflict resolution, team work, and customer service excellence. * Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities. * Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and members of the public. * Ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations. * Considerable knowledge of the North Carolina Building Code, NFPA and OSHA Standards and the Town ordinances relating to fire prevention. * Thorough knowledge of fire prevention methods, fire education, and fire suppression methods. * Thorough knowledge of the types of industrial and commercial operations in the Town and any related potential hazards. * Considerable knowledge of fire suppression hazards, related safety precautions and hazardous materials handling. * Considerable knowledge of the laws and regulations covering fire prevention. * Considerable knowledge of the sources and use of information about current fire prevention, and the skill in their teaching and application. * Ability to enforce codes and laws with firmness and fairness; visual acuity to conduct inspections. * Ability to establish and maintain gook working relationships with other departments and employees, business and civic leaders, and the overall general public. * Ability to prepare and submit clear and concise reports. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
