Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA was established as an Organized Research Unit (ORU) with the mission to develop and strengthen African American Studies at UCLA. The Center supports research that (1) expands the knowledge of the history, lifestyles,and sociocultural systems of people of African descent and (2) investigates problems that have bearing on the psychological, social, and economic well-being of persons of African descent. Research sponsored and conducted by the Bunche Center is multidisciplinary in scope and spans the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and several professional schools. Position Summary The Student Advisor will serve as a main resource and point of contact for students that are part of the Bunche Center fellowship and the Bunche Center scholarship programs. As a first point of contact, the SAO is student-centered in their approach and delivers a warm, welcoming experience, providing assistance and exceptional frontline customer service to students, faculty, staff, the general public, and institutional partners. The Student Advisor will advise on decisions regarding student programs and funding, will develop, implement, and modify policies and procedures for the efficient operation of student services and academic operations. The Student Advisor will serve as a liaison between students, the faculty and academic offices at UCLA including the Financial Aid and Scholarships office, the Registrar's Office, the Summer Sessions office and the Division of Graduate Education. Salary & Compensation * UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications 3 - 5 years Demonstrated experience providing a wide range of student services for an academic department/school/college or higher education organization. (Required) 3 - 5 years Experience assessing student needs and offering practical solutions and approaches to specific problems in a higher education setting. (Required) 3 - 5 years Experience working with financial aid and the ability to determine student financial aid needs in order to recommend strategies for obtaining and managing financial resources. (Required) 3 - 5 years Experience processing financial aid forms. (Required) 3 - 5 years Knowledge of Title IX law and related policies and procedures. (Required) 3 - 5 years Demonstrated experience with academic counseling and advising. Skill in employing fundamental counseling techniques with sensitivity sufficient to assist students in the resolution of problems. (Required) 3 - 5 years Experience with University student services such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Career Center, Registrar's Office, Graduate Division, and other resource centers. (Required) 3 - 5 years Experience with campus resources as well as UCLA system software: OASIS, MyUCLA/Electronic Gradebook, CCLE, Jasmine, SAWEB, CMS, GoGRAD, Counselors Desktop, Zoom, Docusign, etc. (Preferred) Interpersonal skills to relate effectively with persons of various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds as well as different university and college constituencies. (Required)Demonstrated skill in maintaining confidentiality and with a high-level of personal integrity, discretion, diplomacy, honesty, and professional maturity. (Required)Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. (Required)Ability to explain requirements and programs and offer guidance and reassurance as appropriate to students. (Required)Ability to work independently and with frequent interruptions on multiple projects while ensuring accurate, timely completion of projects and tasks. (Required)Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and complete assignments with minimal follow up required from supervisor. (Required)Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, in order to convey accurate and timely information to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required)Demonstrated skill in using Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. (Required)Knowledge and experience creating excel spreadsheets, databases, compiling and updating data, and preparing reports. (Preferred)Familiarity with graphic design tools (Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator).
