The Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities' (HSAS&F), Scientific Instruments (SI) unit has an outstanding opportunity for a Biomedical Electronics Technician 1. SI provides services that support patient care, laboratory and research equipment for University, state, federal and other publicly funded agencies. Services include technology management, regulatory compliance, preventive maintenance, routine or emergency repairs, and design and prototype development. SI is a self-sustaining unit. Major customers include UW Medical Center, Laboratory Medicine, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW Physicians Neighborhood Clinics, Harborview Medical Center and NW Hospital. The BMET 1 will perform entry-level Biomedical Electronics work such as troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing and calibrating a variety of analog, digital and electromechanical instruments used in healthcare, clinical laboratories and medical research. General duties and responsibilities include: Under direct supervision, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, install, test and calibrate basic clinical, laboratory and medical research equipment. Typical Tasks: * Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair electronic, electromechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic device malfunctions to the system, device, assembly or component level as needed to best meet the clinical and financial needs of the customer. * Repair or replace defective patient cables, probes or other accessories. * Perform preventive maintenance by cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, calibrating, verifying performance and electrical safety testing. * Document equipment inspections, repairs and failures in database. * Confer with faculty, staff, healthcare providers, laboratory staff, students, vendors and management to resolve equipment problems. * Provide technical assistance and instruction on equipment operation and maintenance to clinical and laboratory personnel. * Schedule and oversee third-party repairs as necessary. * Assist Senior BMETs in performance of their duties. * May perform repairs on life support equipment under emergent conditions. * Drive state vehicles to service equipment at off-campus locations. * Fabricate custom devices, cables and accessories. * Evaluate, make recommendations and approve devices for use on human subjects. * Evaluate medical equipment involved in unusual incidents. * Other related duties as assigned. Performance Expectations: * Cultivate positive working relationships with coworkers, management, customers, manufacturers, vendors and the general public * Actively support the mission of Scientific Instruments and the University * Set an example of professional appearance and demeanor * Maintain accurate and timely documentation as required * Maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe work environment * Meet personal productivity and billing goals * Continuously develop technical knowledge and skills by active participation in professional associations and by taking relevant training courses. * Review and close work orders in a timely manner to ensure compliance with customer's PM requirements and ensure prompt payment for services * Actively participate in departmental quality and process improvement activities Supervision: * Reports to a BMET Supervisor * Receives daily work assignments and training from Senior BMETs. * May direct the work of others under limited circumstances. Requirements include: * Associate's Degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology or related field OR Equivalent education or experience OR Certification (or Candidacy) by the International Certification Commission (AAMI/ICC) as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) Additional Requirements include: Demonstrate the following communication skills: * Proficiently read, write, understand and communicate in English commensurate with duties and responsibilities of this position * Follow written and verbal instructions and procedures * Present a polite, professional image of the department to both internal and external customers Demonstrate basic computer literacy including ability to use: * Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Access and Outlook * Voicemail & email * Internet Browsers & search engines Demonstrate familiarity with terminology and concepts related to servicing medical and laboratory equipment and be able to effectively communicate these concepts to coworkers and customers. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Working Conditions: * Generally good working conditions. Possible hazards include exposure to electrical shock, ionizing radiation, chemicals and chemical fumes, high-pressure gasses, infectious diseases, and other hazards encountered in clinical and laboratory settings. Protective clothing and equipment may be required in certain environments such as sterile operating rooms, animal care areas and Biosafety Level 3 laboratories. Conditions of Employment: * Work hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM -- may include occasional overtime, weekend or shifted hours as dictated by customer needs. * Must meet requirements to drive a University vehicle including possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license * Must be able to lift / move at least 50 lbs.
