The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Richmond & Henrico County Health Districts (RHHD) are on the forefront of Public Health and Population Health. We accomplish this by exposing and addressing the root causes of health disparities and protecting health through disease prevention and monitoring, providing clinical services, nutrition services, environmental health services, vital records, emergency planning, and building health equity by partnering with communities and working collaboratively across sectors. WE ARE PUBLIC HEALTH! Richmond City Health District is currently seeking two Health Educators (Community Health Workers). Health Educator - CHWs provide educational services for a portion of a district in support of one or more programs. Characteristic activities: trains, educates, and provides information to the public and staff on health educational programs; prepares news releases; reviews, develops, and orders educational materials. As a direct contact to the public and clients on sensitive health issues, may respond to calls received and make appropriate referrals as needed. Provides requested information, and may serve to address emotional, technical, or social resources to callers. Works with considerable independence and demonstrates a wide array of communication and social skills in dealing with a diverse population. These Health Educators - Community Health Workers will provide comprehensive wellness and cardiovascular health services in Richmond & Henrico's priority communities. Community Health Workers not only possess an intimate understanding of the communities they serve, but also are able to more easily establish trusting relationships with residents, key to educating, motivating and inspiring their fellow members of the community to make positive lifestyle choices. This cadre of workers serves as both peer health educators and navigators. By working directly with clients, doing home visits, facilitating educational classes and support groups, and performing community outreach, they help to improve families and individuals' understanding of their own health and available resources. These incumbents will be expected to work in our Richmond Health District (400 East Cary St) as well as other offsite areas in the community as needed. Mileage reimbursement is available for any work-related travel. Typical work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Minimum Qualifications * Knowledge of common community health problems; public/private health care practices; community organizing, survey methods and use of data and health education principles. * Skills in program planning, implementations and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; public speaking; managing group dynamics and providing consultation with other professionals and the general public. * Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; utilize excellent interpersonal skills; maintain good working relationships; work independently with minimal supervision; execute problem solving skills; make appropriate decisions and develop program goals and objectives; evaluate program outcomes, impacts and processes. Additional Considerations * Experience with computers and Microsoft Office software preferred. * Community Health Worker experience preferred. * Bilingual preferred. * Experience in chronic disease health education.
