Job Summary Focus: Cataloging, Inventory Control, ILL services, Tech Support, Circulation Services, Circulation and Adult Services Librarian Support. The Cataloging Specialist will report directly to the Adult Services Librarian. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to cataloging and processing new materials, tech support of various equipment, circulation services, and Interlibrary Loans. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to administrative support for the Adult Services Librarian and department, implementation of new library card procedures with staff, checking records for accuracy and data entry. Shelving support in other departments, arranging new book displays and PT staff training and support are additional requirements of the position. Daily activities also include working the circulation service desk approximately 2-3 hours, working check-in and shelving when needed at BPL and the Bentonville Community Center on intermittent basis, programming/marketing support for Circulation Librarian and understanding reference procedures. Other duties may be assigned. Strong focus on customer service, technology experience, telephone/email etiquette, organizational skills and team work. Focus will be on streamlined/efficient procedures and time management to be successful in responsibilities. Flexibility, adaptability and willingness to learn/perform new responsibilities will be key for success. Requires the application of elementary principles of library and information sciences. Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am- 5:30pm ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting relationships, work assignments and schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential to this position. Requires the application of intermediate principles of library and information sciences. Other duties may be assigned. The essential duties and responsibilities of Library Specialist I are required for the Library Specialist II position. Some library experience and the ability to manage greater responsibilities are required. Able to work independently, requiring minimal supervision. Must demonstrate initiative and professionalism. Leads by example; serves as a mentor to part-time staff and library volunteers. General Services * Works under direct supervision of Librarians/Senior Librarians as dictated by the library's personnel flowchart. * Serves as a supportive teammate demonstrating courtesy and respect to library staff and patrons. * Initiate projects as well as take direction. Willing to accept other responsibilities as necessary. * Works at least six (6) Saturdays per year, and some evenings. Adaptable to work schedule adjustments for the benefit of the library. * Provides general information about library services, equipment and facilities. * Assists in the opening/closing of library and securing of the facility. * Staffs public service desks as required. Performs duties such as emptying drops, shelving, shelf and equipment maintenance, tidying and disinfecting public and staff areas. Supports operations at community center. * Resolves customer complaints in a timely and professional manner. Maintains confidentiality of patron records. Able to handle stressful situations. * Working knowledge of computer and network operating systems, Microsoft Office suite, knowledge of automated systems and Internet resources. * Upholds the American Library Association's Code of Ethics Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statements. Circulation and Adult Services * Monitors the conditions of circulation, adult service areas, public computers and printing equipment. * Issues and updates library cards to assure accuracy of information. Locates and checks out materials. * Sorts materials according to classification code and need for repair, and returns them to their storage area. * Maintains records of accountability of borrowed items, process their respective returns and collect monies for fines, lost and damaged items. * Distributes reminder notices to borrowers for overdue materials; prepare bills for fines and lost materials. * Assists in retrieval of overdue materials and responds to inquiries about overdue bills and notices. * Fulfills all holds services including locker technology at the library and the Community Center. * Maintains knowledge of integrated library system (ILS). * Works efficiently with RFID sorter systems; perform minor trouble-shooting procedures. * Provides reference and reader's advisory services. * Assists patrons in the use of public access catalog, library computer systems and other library equipment. * Provides Inter-Library Loan (ILL) services. * Creates attractive book displays to attract adult library users and encourage use of library collections. * Develops and presents programs and provides services for adults and families. Youth Services * Monitors the conditions of the children's and teen service areas, public computer usage and other technology. * Provides reference and reader's advisory services with a focus on services to children, teens, families and teachers. * Point of contact for placing holds/reserves in library system for patron requests. * Assists patrons in the use of public access catalog, library computer systems and other library equipment. * Assists Librarian with attractive book displays in order to attract young library users and encourage reading and use of library collections. * Develops and presents programs and services for youth such as storytimes, workshops and summer reading programs. * Promotes library programs and services for children and teens. Gives tours of the library. Cataloging * Performs original and copy cataloging in standard MARC formats for library materials established guidelines and national cataloging standards; assigns appropriate Dewey Decimal Classification numbers and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Deletes records from database as required by weeding procedures. * Assigns and processes barcodes and labels for library materials. * Assists Library Director by maintaining cataloging statistics. * Assists in implementing cataloging goals. Administrative Support * Reports to the librarian/Senior Librarian to manage meeting facilities. * Collects statistics and prepares regular reports for Library Director and/or Librarians as required. * Receives, forwards, replies and/or composes professional correspondence. * Serves as specialist in technology hardware, software, online programs and digital services. * Communicates with library vendors for purchasing, support and statistics. * Participates in public programs, outreach and meetings as required. * Coordinates, trains and directs library volunteers in tasks that support library services and staff. * Develops awareness of trends in adult/youth services and of issues affecting general information services. * Assists librarian with training new staff members. * Assists librarian with collection management. * Prepares materials to promote library resources and services. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES In the absence of supervisory librarian(s), able to support and direct teammates as well as respond to patrons requesting public service. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Associate or Bachelor degree or equivalent from four-year college; or five (5) or more years related experience and/or training; or three (3) or more years library experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Library training, workshops, accreditations or other related paraprofessional certificates.
