Department: Western AR Area Technical Center Department's Website: Summary of Job Duties: The Career Coach will assist students to identify career goals through personal and group consultation. Coaches will provide early outreach to students from low-income families and with disabilities and their parent with information about the importance of postsecondary education, as well as accurate information on how to prepare, apply and pay for it. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, career coaches will promote academic and personal success by implementing a comprehensive program that encompasses areas of personal and social development of students as well as academic and career needs. The Career Coach will serve as a student advocate; work to ensure student success; work with high school counselors; present information to groups and individuals at high schools; maintain student records; assist in scheduling career development activities as required by the grant and perform other duties as assigned by the Director to meet grant objectives. This position reports to the Director of Early College Programs. This is a twelve-month position funded by the Arkansas Department of Education, Division of Career and Technical Education from U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career Technical and Adult Education (USDOE-OCTAE) Perkins Innovation and Modernization (PIM) Grant. Qualifications: Education & Work Experience: Bachelor's degree is required. Two to three years related experience preferred. Facilitating Career Development Certification preferred. Master's degree is preferred and prior work with high school students is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position: * Active Listening: Ability to actively attend to, convey, and understand the comments and questions of others * Assertiveness: Ability to act in a self-confident manner to facilitate completion of a work assignment or to defend a position or idea * Communication (Oral): Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word * Customer Oriented: Ability to take care of the customers' needs while following established procedures * Empathetic: Ability to appreciate and be sensitive to the feelings of others * Energetic: Ability to work at a sustained pace and produce quality work * Enthusiastic: Ability to bring energy to the performance of a task * Presentation Skills: Ability to effectively present information publicly * Tactful: Ability to show consideration for and maintain good relations with others. * Friendly: Ability to exhibit a cheerful demeanor toward others * Honesty / Integrity: Ability to be truthful and be seen as credible in the workplace * Decision Making: Ability to make critical decisions while following established procedures * Team Builder: Ability to convince a group of people to work toward a goal * Knowledge of FERPA and the highly confidential nature and scope of this position Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Promote student success initiatives by meeting one on one with students to discuss a issues such as * determine academic and career goals, providing opportunities for students to determine interests and learn about post-secondary options, * assisting students in applying for work-based learning opportunities in the area, * connecting students to concurrent enrollment opportunities aligned to their desired pathway, * supporting students in preparing for and completing industry assessments, * strengthening students understanding of employability skills and importance for success in the workplace, and * improving participant resume writing and interviewing skills. * Develop career development initiatives for students and foster connections with external stakeholders to include activities such as * planning, developing, and implementing exploration opportunities, * connecting participants to job shadowing and mentoring opportunities * collaborating with postsecondary education and training programs to connect students to programs aligned to career goals * Promote the program with external groups such as economic developers, businesses, associations, and local and state agencies to build mutually beneficial connections. * Maintain accurate and complete records of participant interactions, events, and other work to demonstrate achievement of grant objectives and prepare reports as required. Other Duties and Responsibilities: * Other duties as assigned * Requires consistent on-time attendance * Must be self-motivated and have ability to multitask and work unsupervised. * Must abide by the Arkansas Educator Code of Ethics, as established by the Arkansas Department of Education. * Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time, with or without notice. Additional Information: Working Relationships: Works primarily in a high school setting and will be placed in a local high school partner location. Has daily contact with students, high school counselors, high school teachers, high school administrators, university faculty and staff. List Employees Supervised: None. Special Job Dimensions: Work is performed in a high school setting. Occasional extended walking required (on-campus) for deliveries and errands. Walks and sits for extended periods of time, doing data entry, bends to find materials in files. Occasional overtime required during peak periods. Travel to participating high schools is required. The Career Coach will typically work a 40-hour work week and hours may vary depending on the requirements of the work location.
