JOB DESCRIPTIONCity of Allentown Internship Description Class Title: Special Events Intern Compensation: $15.00 per hour Department: Department of Parks and Recreation Bureau: Special Events GENERAL PURPOSE To assist in the operations of various City of Allentown Special Events such as Lights in the Parkway, Halloweekend, 4th of July, Classics and Cruisers and other city run events as needed. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the supervision of the Special Events Manager and / or Special Events Coordinator and / or the Director of Parks and Recreation as needed. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist with the onsite operations of various City of Allentown run Special Events. * Work closely with volunteers, vendors, entertainers, and City Staff from various departments. * Be on site for city run Special Events for the duration of set up, event operations and tear down. * Meets the attendance requirements of the position, which calls for a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. * Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to City customers, citizens and internal departments. * Meet with Special Event Manager and/or Special Event Coordinator on a regular basis regarding upcoming event needs. * Must be able to be self-motivated and work remotely when needed. * Performs related work as may be required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: (A) High School Diploma or equivalent (B) Pursuing Associates or bachelor's degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management and/or Event Management or a related field at an accredited University NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (A) Ability to exercise strong customer service skills. (B) Strong knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications. (C) Ability to assist in marketing and advertising effectively (websites/social media/print/mail). (D) Ability to cooperate with private and public agencies and public to organize and conduct effective events. (E) Ability to work independently. (F) Ability to deal with and interact with the public using diplomacy. (G) Ability to develop marketing materials. (H) Ability to keep and organize detailed records. (I) Interact effectively with city staff, volunteers, vendors and entertainers. (J) Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups with diplomacy and professionalism. (K) Exercise sound judgment and flexibility. (L) Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions. (M) Ability to prioritize work assignments, handle multiple tasks and projects, resulting in work being performed in the most efficient and timely manner. (N) Excellent problem-solving skills. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Requires intensive daily use of personal computer, telephone, copier, scanner, and other office equipment. Must have stamina to occasionally stand and walk for a minimum of four (4) hours. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but can become loud based on seasonal recreation activities.
