Job Description Collin County is seeking candidates for the position of Legal Clerk I. This position performs legal clerk duties as related to arraignment processes. Works closely with Justice Judges and jail staff to effectively provide legal and administrative support to the arraignment proceedings. Works closely with Indigent Defense Specialist to ensure system wide compliance per Texas Fair Defense Act and the Task Force on Indigent Defense. Performs eligibility and income verification to determine indigency for defendants. Coordinates work with jail staff, indigent defense coordinator, court clerks and judges. Ensures application completeness and accuracy through verification. Creates tracking database using computer applications such as Excel and/or Access. Works directly with defendants in completion of applications. Performs related duties as required. This position requires driving to multiple county locations daily. Work is performed under the direction of the Program Coordinator. Candidates must have the knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Knowledge of court proceedings and processing court documents is preferred. Candidates must have at least one year of previous clerical experience, and must have level of education equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Must possess sufficient skill to type at the rate of 35 words per minute. Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class C Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Testing Requirements This position requires that you pass a typing test at the minimum rate specified above. * If you have taken a typing test with us within the last 6 months that meets or exceeds the requirements above, you do not need to take it again. * If you have never taken our typing test, have not met the requirements above, or it has been more than 6 months since your last test, you will need to take the test in order for your application to be complete. Typing tests are administered in the Human Resources Testing room from 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. You do not need an appointment to test, but you will need to bring a government issued photo ID.
