Description Position Title: Water Treatment Plant Operator/Trainee Division: Water Plant Salary: $35,558.48 Hourly Rate: $17.09 Job Number: 621 Department: Utilities Pay Grade: 11 Location: Valdosta, Georgia Closing Date: Open until Filled Water Treatment Plant Operator License Incentives: * Class III: $17.96/hr * Class II: $18.87/hr * Class I: $19.82/hr The City of Valdosta Utilities Department is seeking applicants for the Water Plant Operator Trainee position. This position is responsible for performing specialized duties in the operation of a water treatment plant. Major duties for this position include but are not limited to: Overview * Operating equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels * Monitoring the SCADA system to ensure proper plant operations * Servicing, maintaining, operating, and repairing facilities and equipment, including large-scale pumping devices, chlorination and other chemical feed systems, storage facilities, and related equipment * Collecting samples; performing laboratory analyses to ensure that treatment facilities are operating efficiently * Making rounds of plants, reading gauges and readers, and recording readings * Maintaining, calibrating, and repairing a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, motors, controllers, valves, charts, and plant instrumentation * Maintaining maintenance and chemical analysis records; preparing logs, records, and reports, including required local, state, and federal reports * Maintaining plant facilities; paints interior and exterior surfaces; making minor building repairs * Reading and interpreting plans, maps, and specifications * Responding to after-hours emergencies * Attending required training class * Performing other related duties as assigned. Qualifications * Knowledge of treatment principles, operations, and equipment. * Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs. * Knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, hydraulics, and biology. * Knowledge of division and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations. * Skill in the interpretation of plans, maps, and specifications. * Skill in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electronic equipment. * Skill in planning, organization, and decision making. * Skill in thinking clearly under difficult circumstances. * Skill in oral and written communication. * Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. * Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. * Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. * Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate.
