The Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security works to develop sustainable, nonpartisan strategies to address the most important security challenges and opportunities facing the United States and the world. The Center honors General Brent Scowcroft's legacy of service and embodies his ethos of nonpartisan commitment to the cause of security, support for U.S. leadership in cooperation with allies and partners, and dedication to the mentorship of the next generation of leaders. Overview of the Role The Director and Senior Fellow will support the Vice President and Senior Director of the Scowcroft Center in overseeing operations and technical management of the Center. This individual will ensure that the Center runs smoothly by facilitating strong communication and cross-Center collaboration among the initiatives. The Director will collaborate with other Programs and Centers, and supporting services, to ensure the business needs of the Scowcroft Center are met. This individual will manage the Center's external communications and play an external representational role for the center as needed, including events, meeting with officials, and engaging donors. The Director will assist the Senior Director in thought leadership and will contribute technical inputs to Initiatives across the Center's work as needed. The role is based in our Washington, DC headquarters on a hybrid schedule, with at least three days per week in the office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $190,000-$200,000. Job responsibilities * Serve as a bridge between SCSS staff and leadership, including communicating on the staff's behalf to management. In close collaboration with colleagues, execute the vision and priorities of the leadership team. * With the Senior Director and other members of the management team, oversee the Center and ensure its operations run smoothly to achieve its mission, from budget stewardship to hiring standards to technical outputs. * Play a representational role with internal and external stakeholders as needed, including by providing remarks at or moderating events, meeting with donors, and briefing officials. * Serve as internal operational point of contact (including other Centers and Programs and supporting services), maintaining a superb Council-wide reputation for efficiency, effectiveness, and collegiality. * Help organize and run staff meetings. * Ensure the weekly SCSS newsletter publishes a timely, high-quality product to subscribers and stakeholders, and oversee communications channels and platforms, including social media accounts, website, and more. * Support the biannual Scowcroft Center Advisory Council meetings, including working with colleagues on the Scowcroft Management team to coordinate logistics. * Manage the Scowcroft Center's relationship with key funders, including coordinating with relevant programs and centers to develop fundraising materials, organizing meetings with visiting officials, and ensuring deliverables are completed in a timely manner. * Assist in managing and incubating initiatives and centers. * Partner directly with the Finance team to ensure sound fiscal stewardship, timeliness, and effectiveness. * Partner with the Development team to help communicate and track opportunities and projects across the Center. * Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications * Master's degree in a relevant field strongly preferred. * At least 10 years of relevant experience in a matrixed organization. * Skilled in clear, persuasive, and effective communications with various stakeholders, including excellent writing skills, and experience presenting to high-level audiences. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence. * Demonstrated experience managing teams. * Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills. * Detail-oriented with strong organizational inclination. * Experienced in MS Office, and in digital communications for engagement. * Project or program budget management experience. * Demonstrated ability to work independently on multi-step, detail-oriented projects in a fluid environment. * Team player with a can-do attitude and a passion for our shared work as an organization. * Embodiment of our organizational values of teamwork and optimism.
