Job Summary
The Iowa State University Library is seeking user-focused professional applicants for Library Assistant II to join a team of enthusiastic and collaborative archivists in the Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Home to Iowa State University's rare books, manuscripts, archival, and historic media collections, The Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) is committed to the University's land grant mission to serve Iowans and the wider world by making these materials publicly available. The Special Collections Assistant (Library Assistant II) position plays a significant role in upholding these values by holding regularly scheduled shifts at the public service desk in SCUA's reading room. As the main point of access to SCUA's collections, the reading room allows researchers to interact with unique and rare materials. This position welcomes visitors and assists them in how to use finding aids and assist in identifying primary source materials, and properly handling materials. Through observation of collection usage in the Reading Room, they protect the collections from mishandling, mistreatment, and theft.
Additionally, this position is responsible for fulfilling all duplication requests submitted in person, through mail, and electronically. SCUA provides scans of its materials to researchers for reference purposes and to be used in publications and digital copies from its media collections for film and television productions. Included in this work will be gathering page counts and estimating costs on requests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* In-depth knowledge of unit's routines, functions, policies, procedures, and forms.
* Ability to communicate effectively with staff and library users, orally and in writing.
* Knowledge of library terminology and academic and bibliographic vocabulary.
* Basic skill in utilizing a computer, software, online systems, and conventional office equipment.
* Ability to respond to a variety of queries from library users and staff requiring judgment in the application of unit policies.
* Ability to accurately follow and interpret oral and written instruction and exercise judgment in its application.
* Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
* Ability to exercise functional supervision over employees.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
