Job Responsibilities General Responsibility: Serve as a Special Agent in SLED's Special Victims Unit - Department of Child Fatalities. Participate in the detection of crime and enforcement of criminal laws; plan and conduct complete investigations of child death, child abuse and/or child neglect, and other complex investigations; and perform tasks supporting local law enforcement when requested. Specific Duties: * Conduct Investigations: Gather and develop material facts, supporting information, and evidence related to the violations of state and/or federal law, specifically regarding child deaths, child abuse, and/or child neglect. Interview or interrogate, as appropriate, suspects, victims and witnesses to crimes or relevant matters; examine records and collect physical and documentary evidence. Make arrests, searches and seizures, conduct surveillance of criminal suspects, and organize and manage case load. * Report Information: Consult with supervisor concerning new investigations and significant events related to on-going active investigations. Prepares accurate, thorough, complete, and grammatically correct reports of investigations, reports of interviews, statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documents. Present investigative findings to the court through testimony, as required. * Support Local and State Agencies: Develop professional relationships with local law enforcement agencies, coroners, and other local and state agencies to build relationships that will foster a positive work environment and support the overall mission of SLED and the Child Death Investigation Task Forces (CDITF). Assists with training on child death investigations and CDITF. Provides assistance with other investigations when requested. * Perform Administrative Tasks: Prepare and submit SLED daily and enters working time into SCEIS in required time period. Ensure case files are up to date and accurate. Close case files after ensuring all required documentation has been completed. * Support Program Areas: Perform assigned tasks in support of the SLED SVU. Participate in SLED mandatory training. Maintain SLED issued equipment. Assist other SLED units as assigned and perform other details or duties as required. Minimum and Additional Requirements * Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience performing investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. * Must be a commissioned certified law enforcement officer as required by the SC Criminal Justice Academy. If your certification is from another state or the federal government, you must successfully complete the requirements of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy to become a Class I Law Enforcement Officer in South Carolina. * Skilled verbal and written communication and ability to articulate and explain complex situations/incidents in a straightforward, simple manner. * Skilled in judgement and planning. * Ability to recognize probable cause. * Must be computer proficient in Microsoft Office programs. * Assignments will be throughout the state and on rare occasions out of state. * Some assignments may require overnight stays. * The agent will work and response statewide when requested. Preferred Qualifications * Prefer one (1) year experience dealing specifically with child abuse/child death investigation.
