ENTRY SALARY: $36,300.00 POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED  Under direct supervision, the Meter Reader I performs general clerical and field work reading gas and water meters, recording consumption, and using automated or manual equipment to make accurate reports.    Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  * Locates, reads, and records readings from gas and water meters, for regularly scheduled billing or for initial, final, or verification purposes as may be assigned.    * Performs, completes, and records field service orders as assigned; compiles, notes, and reports water or gas leaks; identifies stopped, inaccurate, or otherwise defective meters.    * Checks readings against normal consumption with special attention to high/low averages for general accuracy; compiles and creates accurate reports and records for appropriate billing.   * Confers, engages, and communicates with customers on various problems, issues, and complaints; provides and performs excellent customer service.    * Assists, supports, and participates in office and field work related to meter reading and customer billing; ensures meter reading accuracy and provides timely reports for accurate and uninterrupted billing.    * Performs other duties as assigned.  Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:  A valid State driver's license is required.  Employees who satisfactorily complete the probationary period in this job classification and meet the job proficiency standards of the apprentice program will be promoted to Meter Reader II.  Education and Experience:  High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate PLUS the ability to successfully complete the City's Field Service proficiency Guide within two (2) years of the date of hire; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Knowledge of -   * Utility office billing practices and procedures  * City Service Area  * General municipal meters  * Office practices, procedures, and equipment  * Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records  * General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment    Skill in -   * Reading meters with consistent accuracy  * Reading and interpreting maps and service locations  * Walking for extended period of time  * Using various tools and equipment to perform readings  * Communicating and engaging with the public  * Recognizing and responding to hazardous conditions  * Establishing and maintaining strong office relationships  * Operating a computer and related software
