GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS Perform entry level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training in Lakeland Fire Department. Perform assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. Specific activities vary by department. Work is performed under direct supervision. This internship is with the Lakeland Fire Department located at 701 E. Main St., Lakeland, FL 33801. Interns will work a maximum of 29 hours a week. This internship can begin in early September. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Coordinate and schedule department holiday events, ensuring all activities are well-planned * Collaborate with different departments and community partners to organize and promote events * Maintain a detailed calendar of events and deadlines * Assist with development and execution of content for the Lakeland Fire Department's social media platforms * Assist in the planning and execution of public safety programs, such as fire prevention workshops, school visits, and community outreach events * Help prepare educational materials and presentations for various audiences * Participate in community events to promote fire safety and prevention * Provide administrative support for the public relations team, including scheduling meetings, taking minutes * Perform other duties as assigned to support the department's public relations efforts ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Perform related work as required QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) Enrollment as a Junior in an accredited college or university in a major relating to Public Relations, Communications, Education, or a related major Required: A Resumé must be uploaded with the application to be considered for this position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES * Knowledge of the Adobe Suite, Canva, and related design programs * Ability to develop a lesson plan and present information in an engaging way * Knowledge of Social Media platforms * Skill in the use of personal computers and standard office equipment * Ability to promptly and effectively complete tasks * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City employees and the general public * Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS: * Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations * The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards * The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing and speaking All City of Lakeland positions are subject to testing (e.g. written, oral, performance, computerized, interview, and/or any combination).
