Description Title: Certified Athletic Trainer (Pay Band A) Position Numbers: 97287T and 97288T Hiring Unit: Athletics Department Location: UH at Manoa Band: A Salary: salary schedules and placement information Full Time/Part Time: Full-time Month: 11-month Temporary/Permanent: Temporary Other Conditions: Filling two (2) positions. For best consideration, review of applications to begin June 19, 2024. Continuous recruitment until programmatic needs are met. Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes essential functions): * Under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, assists the Head Trainer in administering, coordinating, and supervising all activities of the Athletic Training Room. * *Serves as the Certified Athletic Trainer for assigned sports. * *Renders care and management of injuries and illnesses to student-athletes for all team workouts and contests of assigned sport(s). Coverage could include traveling with teams approximately 2-3 times a month for trips of 5-7 days on average. * *Administers first aid treatment as required by the situation, including life giving first aid, CPR, and AED. Required to deal with potentially health hazardous situations (i.e. communicable diseases- cold and flu, AIDS, skin infections, etc) * *Ensures the health, safety, and well-being of all student-athletes participating in the twenty-one intercollegiate athletic teams. * *Assists in promoting and maintaining an environment where physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority. * *Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the supervision, training, and instruction of the athletic training student and volunteers, and student-athletes in all aspects of the program. * *Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in referring and scheduling appointments for injured student-athletes who need extended care to various physicians, hospitals and other health services. Transports student-athletes to medical appointments as necessary. * *Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in scheduling and administering pre-participation physical exams for student-athletes to determine if they are physically/mentally able to compete. * *Evaluates of the nature, scope and/or extent of injury. Determines initial action/aid or protocol to be followed. * *Under the direction of the Team Physician and Head Athletic Trainer, implements and monitors athletic training programs for the treatment and rehabilitation per student-athlete's diagnosis and current condition. * *Provides general counseling and guidance to student-athletes for medical (i.e. injuries, illnesses, rehabilitation, nutrition, etc) and non-medical (i.e. interpersonal, social, behavioral, etc) problems including making appropriate referrals. * *Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in preparing the training room, budget, purchases, dispenses and stocks equipment and supplies for the training room and medical care. * *Assists in implementing and supporting the Department concussion management plan. * *Assists in general maintenance of modalities and rehabilitation equipment. * *Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in maintaining accurate and up to date medical records and progress notes in the Electronic Medical Record system, and communicates with team physicians for each student-athlete injury and illness. * *Works closely with department Insurance Coordinator with insurance claims and to assist with resolving problems with health care providers. * *Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with member of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department. * *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act. * *Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, flies, and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawai'i policies. * *Knows, recognizes, and complies with laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations have occurred or will occur, whether by employees, students or others. * Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: * Possession of a baccalaureate degree in athletics training, physical education, kinesiology or related field and one (1) year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. * Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine as demonstrated by the knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. * Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with athletic training in intercollegiate sports medicine. * Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the field of athletic training. * Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. * Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. * Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. * Valid Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer. * Valid CPR/AED Certification. * Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays during athletic related scheduled events. * Ability to administer physical therapeutic treatment after evaluating the athlete's limitation and explain and instruct the student-athlete in adhering to the treatment plan. * Ability to apply the knowledge and skills to treat, stabilize and transport student-athlete with an injury. * Ability to apply CPR, fracture immobilization, control hemorrhage, evaluate injuries, etc. * Knowledge of the general principles of personal hygiene, nutrition, and first aid treatment of injuries and illnesses. * Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques associated with intercollegiate sports medicine. * Must possess Certified Athletic Trainer License with the State of Hawai'i (or upon hire). * Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver's license (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation, which meets position needs. * Working knowledge of applicable NCAA, OSHA, and HIPAA standards. * Excellent organizational and time management skills. * Ability to provide excellent customer service.
