Duties Summary Performs professional work in planning, organizing, and conducting a recreation program consisting of a variety of recreational specialties and activities; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Recreation Division in Kealakekua/Captain Cook at Yano Hall. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. Examples of Duties * Plans, organizes, schedules, and directs competitive and non-competitive games, contests, arts and crafts activities for various age groups. * Stimulates interest in recreation programs among children and adults. * Participates in planning and directing special events. * Plans and conducts excursions, picnics, and camps. * Attends community meetings. * Reviews activities and makes recommendations to improve programs. * Supervises the work of lower level staff members and volunteer workers as assigned. * Provides administrative supervision for staff in an assigned cluster of facilities. * Officiates games and contests. * Works with community groups, organizations, and schools. * Participates in district and county-wide events or programs. * Serves on special committees. * Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops. * Conducts and/or participates in staff training activities. * Issues recreation equipment. * Maintains attendance and activity records. * Prepares and submits reports. Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to: * graduation from an accredited college or university with work (baccalaureate degree) in recreation, physical education, education, or a related field (scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), and * one (1) year of experience in planning, organizing, and directing recreational programs and activities, and * possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver' s license at the time of hire). Note: Possession of a current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate prior to completion of probation. Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. It is essential that the applicant describe fully the duties and responsibilities of each position held, specify the date of each position held (from and to, month and year), and indicate the number of hours worked per week. Note: In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai'i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person and at their own expense at that phase of the selection process. Knowledge of: basic recreation and leisure services philosophy; the principles, practices, and techniques used in recreation; playground administration and operation; group behavior; principles and practices of supervision; departmental regulations. Ability to: demonstrate qualities of leadership; plan and direct the work of volunteer workers as necessary; organize and instruct groups of children and adults; inspire confidence and enthusiasm in groups and individuals, and encourage them in group program participation; maintain good relationships with the staff and public; understand and follow oral and written instructions; prepare reports; gather information; speak before groups.
