In collaboration with the Senior Nursing Director - Procedural Services, Vice President - Procedural Services, and Director of Strategy and Ambulatory Programs, the Procedural Nursing Director plans, organizes, implements and oversees clinical activities and program development in in Endoscopy and Interventional Radiology/Interventional Nephrology, to contribute to meeting the mission and goals of Brigham & Women's Faulkner Hospital as well as the regulatory requirements of the Joint Commission and other applicable federal, state and local regulatory or accrediting agencies. Responsibilities include oversight of professional nursing practice, through the planning, management and day-to-day operations of assigned area(s) to ensure quality patient care and outcomes for patients in the following age groups: adolescents, adults and geriatrics. The Procedural Nursing Director collaborates with medical and administrative directors, physicians, and clinical staff to support and advocate for the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. Position reports to the Senior Nursing Director and Vice President, Procedural Services. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT * Participates in planning process and budget development. Accountable for operating within the budget and explaining variances. * Participates in planning with the Senior Nursing Director, Medical Directors, Vice President - Procedural Services, and the Director of Strategy and Ambulatory Programs in designing and implementation of new programs for each clinical area * Acts as a resource to plan and implement system changes both intra-departmentally and interdepartmentally. * Coordinates unit/department efforts in preparation for Joint Commission and other regulatory agency visits. Maintains a state of "continuous readiness" for Department of Public Health (DPH) and/or Joint Commission review. * Identifies opportunities for improvement in service excellence and initiates measures to achieve them. * Develops, reviews, and/or revises unit based standards, policies, and procedures based on evidence based practices and professional organization standards. * Fosters and promotes a collaborative culture and environment that recognizes excellence in clinical practice. MANAGEMENT OF FINANCIAL RESOURCES * Prepares, monitors, and administers annual budgets for cost centers considering trends, projections and department/hospital objectives and goals. * Develops, implements, and evaluates corrective action plans for variances. * Identifies and prioritizes capital budget needs for area(s) of responsibility. * Authorizes labor and other expenditures to meet patient care needs for assigned clinical areas. * Demonstrates cost awareness by comparing and analyzing cost center expenditures monthly and effectively utilizing space and supplies within budgetary constraints. Works collaboratively with ambulatory leadership to review visit volume/capacity, cost/case, etc. MANAGEMENT OF STAFF * Oversees preceptor performance and orientation on assigned clinical areas in collaboration with the professional development. * Collaborates with the professional development in the development and implementation of the Competency Based Orientation Program and facilitates compliance. * Collaborates with the professional development to support the unit based competency program for the service lines & clinical units. * Ensures incorporation of patient/family education into patient/family teaching programs. * Ensures incorporation of age specific criteria in patient/family teaching programs. * Demonstrates a commitment to health education by facilitating affiliations and clinical placement of nursing students and students of allied health professionals * Implements strategies to improve the quality of service, quality of patient care and level of patients and staff satisfaction in assigned areas. * Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates performance, and initiates disciplinary action as necessary for clinical and nonclinical staff. Seeks feedback, evaluation, and guidance from the professional staff as appropriate and per established personnel policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with the professional development and Human Resources/Labor Management staff as needed. * Collaborates with Administrative Director on nonclinical staff roles and responsibilities to ensure effective operations and support business needs, e.g. revenue cycle responsibilities. Coordinates nonclinical staff hiring and performance evaluation with the Administrative Directors. * Establishes and maintains provision of exceptional customer service and high level of patient/family satisfaction. * Initiates timely and appropriate management interventions inclusive of coaching, counseling, and progressive discipline. * Interprets and enforces hospital and departmental policies for all employees. * In collaboration with the professional development, monitors and schedules staff due for mandatory training, TB testing, CPR certification and any other requirements to meet BWFH, DPH and Joint Commission standards. * Assesses the adequacy of staffing levels for clinical staff. Assigns work and monitor staff workload to maintain maximum efficiency. * Evaluates and approves staff schedule changes and requests for time off, ensuring that staffing needs of the unit/practice are met. Approves time sheets and coordinate payroll in collaboration with Operations Coordinator. PATIENT CARE AND PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT * Ensures that care plans are inter-professional based on individualized patient care needs and goals. * Is a consultant to team members on issues related to collaborative practice, patient and staff safety. * Anticipates and identifies potential safety risks and takes appropriate action. * Evaluates products, devices and procedures for patient and staff safety. Assures education of staff regarding their use. * Assures compliance with safety standards ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS * Maintains and promotes an atmosphere which reflects the mission and values of the organization based on iCare Standards and Code of Professional Conduct. * Respects and supports a culturally diverse staff and patient population. * Applies human resource policies fairly. * Advocates for patients/families and patient care team. * Respects and supports patient rights, advocacy and confidentiality. * Supports and implements procedures for resolving ethical conflicts. * Investigates and responds to patient complaints. Evaluates trended issues and responds accordingly. COLLABORATIVE INTERPROFESSIONAL CARE * Participates on inter-professional committees and supports organizational change. * Establishes collaborative relationships with hospital leadership council members, ambulatory services management and staff, and medical staff. * Promotes relationships based on mutual respect and support. * Functions as a facilitator, mediator and role model for teamwork and collaboration. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT * Develops and implements quality improvement (QI) plans for the department in collaboration with the team. * Assures QI results and current evidence based data are used to evaluate patient care. * Facilitates and supports the shared governance structure within the nursing department and the individual Unit Based Council/s. * Actively supports the ambulatory team in leadership of patient care rounds, huddles and other forums as needed. ADDITIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITES * Communicates effectively. * Maintains and fosters a teamwork approach to patient care. * Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development. * Continuously evaluates own work activities to identify opportunities for improvement. * Performs other duties as assigned. Our employees call it home. * Master's degree in nursing or a relative field required. * Bachelor's degree in nursing required. * Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License required. * Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required. * National professional nursing certification as a nurse executive (NE-BC) preferred. * 5 years nursing experience required. * Previous leadership experience with demonstrated staff supervision ability required. Management experience preferred. * Procedural nursing experience preferred. * Staff adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards. * Fosters an environment of professional practice, teamwork and accountability. * Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. * Self - directed, self-starter and able to implement new programs. * Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement and evidence-based projects. * Organizational skills to set priorities and to proficiently complete assigned workload. * Ability to work well under pressure due to critical patient care issues, changing organizational climate and personnel issues * Effective verbal and written communication skills to give clear direction, coaching and feedback to staff. Excellent customer service skills. * Ability to work well with others in a culturally diverse environment. * Must ensure the availability of 24- hour and emergency coverage. May be involved in escalated calls.
