Position Description Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo is transforming the way we do government and is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and motivated Deputy Chief of Staff to join our team and shape the vision for the future of Harris County. The Deputy Chief of Staff will work closely with the Chief of Staff to manage the activities of the County Judge's Office (CJO), support the work of the County Judge, and liaise with other County departments and offices as needed to execute goals and other initiatives. The Deputy Chief of Staff will engage with or oversee other team members to carry out duties that are of critical importance to the office. About the Harris County Judge: Harris County is the third largest and most diverse county in the nation, with a population of more than 4.7 million, rivaling the size of the entire state of Louisiana. Judge Hidalgo functions as the CEO of Harris County and presides over the Harris County Commissioners Court, the County's governing body. Along with four County Commissioners, the County Judge directs a budget of more than $4 billion providing essential services such as justice administration, flood control, infrastructure, and housing. Judge Hidalgo also serves as Harris County's Director of Emergency Management. Duties and Responsibilities: * Collaborate with the Chief of Staff, Director of Operations and Administration, Policy Director, Director of Communications, and other CJO leaders to develop strategic plans and policies that aligns with Judge Hidalgo's vision and goals. This may include participation in various countywide committees, conducting research, gathering data and analyzing trends to inform decision-making processes. * Oversee the CJO divisions as assigned including the Policy, Communications, and Operations and Administration Teams. * Drive the strategic planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programs and policy initiatives that align with the county's Strategic Plan and CJO goals and priorities in concert with the Policy Director. * Oversee and support the implementation of select county-wide initiatives and programs by working with CJO staff, precinct leadership and staff, department directors, and department staff. * Participate in select countywide hiring and other committees and initiatives to represent the Judge's goals and vision regarding such activities. * Regularly evaluate and improve efficiency through improvements to systems and processes as well as by optimizing the effectiveness of administrative and other select staff, and pursuing training and other growth opportunities where applicable. * Continuously assess and address the needs of the County Judge's Office to ensure it runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. * Support the implementation of select county-wide initiatives and programs by working with CJO staff, precinct leadership and staff, department directors, and department staff. * Work with Judge Hidalgo, the Chief of Staff, Policy Director, and Chief Communications Officer to define short- and long-term policy priorities for the CJO. * Support Judge Hidalgo, the Chief of Staff and Emergency Management Strategic Advisor during Emergency Management activations. * Step in for the Chief of Staff when needed. General Information Position Type and Typical Hours of Work: * Regular Full-time * Monday - Friday | 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. * Requires the ability to work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, on a frequent basis. Salary: * Depends on Qualifications * Based on 26 Pay Periods Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
