Job Description This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Division of AMYA is recruiting for a Platoon Leader position! This position is in the SS bargaining unit at a range 15. ONLY MALE APPLICANTS WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION. What You Will Be Doing: This position functions as a Platoon Leader which supervises Team Leaders who directly engage with and monitor Cadets for the ChalleNGe program and is part of a successful leadership team dedicated to changing and improving the lives of youth 16-18 years of age. Mission and Culture: This position's function has responsibility for the accountability, direct supervision, health, welfare, and safety of Cadre Staff and Cadets. The incumbent acts as a positive role model, ensures the staff and cadets comply with Program standards, performs performance-based behavior counseling and conducts risk assessments of activities to ensure they are performed within safe parameters. AMYA has a 24 hour per day/seven day per week mission. This position is essential to the staffing requirements for the health and safety of staff and students. Benefits of Joining Our Team: The Platoon Leader position is located on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) at Camp Carrol. Platoon Leaders work mainly independently while on shift. As a Platoon Leader you will spend about 25% of your time outdoors conducting Adventure Training enjoying the Alaska Outdoors, there is ample parking, paved trails for break time walking or jogging, JBER is a desirable work location for you! The Working Environment You Can Expect: Locate on JBER at Camp Carrol, AMYA Platoon Leaders are responsible for the accountability, direct control, supervision, health, welfare, safety, and esprit-de-corps of 40-70 cadets enrolled at the AMYA and 9 Team Leaders. Supervision: Plans, distributes, and monitors work assignments; sets task priorities; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner. Assignments include the authority and responsibility to recommend or independently take action to employ (i.e., appoint, transfer, promote), discipline or discharge, or adjudicate grievances of direct reports. Conflict Management: Encourages creative tension and differences of opinions. Anticipates and takes steps to prevent counter-productive confrontations. Manages and resolves conflicts and disagreements in a constructive manner. Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences. Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. The background check will include fingerprinting. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of the federal background check and issuance of a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) card allowing base access. Also, you must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment. If using a private vehicle this will require a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of vehicle insurance, and a valid State of Alaska vehicle registration. Special Note: In addition, in some cases employees must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC). As part of the examination process, a background check investigation, including a criminal records check, will be conducted. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment. The circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered. Minimum Qualifications Please ensure your application (through work history, training, education, licenses, certifications, etc.) supports/demonstrates you possess the minimum required competencies for the job class. Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience as an AMYA Team Leader or the equivalent in any of the National Guard ChalleNGe programs; AND Possession of a valid driver license. AND Must be 21 years of age or older. Substitution: A high school diploma or GED; AND One year of experience, paid or volunteer, providing counseling or directing and coordinating group activities for youth ages 14 -19; AND Possession of a valid driver's license. AND Must be 21 years of age or older. Special Requirements: As a condition of continued employment, individuals employed as an AMYA Platoon Leader must obtain a State of Alaska Commercial Driver License (CDL) with "P" endorsement within 90 days of initial appointment. As a condition of continued employment, individuals employed as an AMYA Platoon Leader must obtain American Red Cross Basic First Aid and CPR Instructor Certification within 180 days of initial appointment. Special Note: As part of the examination process, an extensive background investigation will be conducted. The investigation includes a criminal record check and a review of work history to determine fitness of character and suitability for work around at-risk youth in an educational environment. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment; the circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered. AMYA Platoon Leaders are required to obtain and possess a CDL, subsequent to a conditional job offer, candidates are required to submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and driving history background check as required by 49 CFR 382, unless otherwise exempted. Additionally, upon obtaining their CDL, AMYA Platoon Leaders will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing as required by 49 CFR 382. AMYA Platoon Leaders work a nonstandard workweek, which may require rotation between day, evening and graveyard shifts, and may include weekends and holidays. Use of tobacco products in the presence of the cadets enrolled at the AMYA is not permitted; the use of tobacco products is only permitted in designated locations. "Competencies" means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation. "Training" and "education" in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the- job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs. "Typically gained by" means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.
