The Mechanical Engineering department leads in the mechanical hardware design, development, and production of weapons systems. We use state-of-the-art tools, processes, and technology, with capabilities encompassing a broad range of technical disciplines, including product engineering, manufacturing, technical services, materials engineering, analysis and test, rapid hardware development/builds and configuration and data management documentation. Job Summary: The Materials Engineering Department is looking for a Senior Materials Scientist with non-metal materials application experience to join our team. This position is in Andover, MA (Onsite) This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to engage subject matter experts and perform hands-on-testing of materials including adhesives, rubbers, tapes, other polymer systems, composites, and various other production materials. The role will support all phases of product life cycle (including design, development, and production) for a multitude of programs. Analyses will cover a wide range of topics from material characterization, process and part development, process improvement, obsolescence, and failure analysis. Responsibilities to Anticipate: * Assessing materials based on conformance to specifications. * Conducting hands on testing of materials using a variety of laboratory techniques and instrumentation * Developing methods and test plans * Leading small-scale characterization and design projects * Following standard written protocols and utilizing a variety of databases * Reviewing material documentation and assessment of specifications * Reviewing technical thermal and mechanical data (DSC, DMA, TGA, TMA, and Rheology) * Evaluation of obsolescence risk * Engagement with subject matter experts to understand material usage. * Engagement with suppliers * Engagement with engineers to understand customer needs and provide customer support. * Documentation and communication of results and findings Basic Qualifications: * Typically requires a Bachelor's in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) * Five (5) years of professional experience in chemistry, non-metal materials science, or hold a PhD Degree in related disciplines. * Experience with general laboratory equipment such as ovens, scales, thermometers, thermocouples, microscopes, calipers, reading dials, and/or Vernier scales. * Experience with material testing/analysis - hardness, mechanical adhesion tests, sample preparation procedures, and/or analytical techniques * Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance. Preferred Qualifications: * Understanding of Instrumental Analysis (FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA, Rheology, GCMS, ICP-OES, HPLC, GPC, SEM-EDS) * Understanding of Analytical Chemistry * Understanding of Polymer Chemistry * Understanding of Polymer and Material Science * Understanding of material safety datasheets and Military Specifications * Adhesive and other non-metal material application design in an academic or industrial setting * Materials or chemical research in an academic or industrial setting * ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. * Demonstrated strong written and verbal scientific communication skills. * Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects. Ratio of time working onsite will be determined in partnership with your leader. * Remote: Employees who are working in Remote roles will work primarily offsite (from home). An employee may be expected to travel to the site location as needed. Clearance Information: This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
