Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Job Description
Overview
An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a medical specialist who focuses on the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of conditions that affect the mouth, head, face and neck. They perform corrective jaw surgery to treat misaligned jaws as well as facial trauma resulting from injury or birth defects. Other services provided by oral surgeons include wisdom teeth removal; dental implant placement; reconstructive surgery to correct cleft lip/palate deformities; evaluation and treatment of TMJ disorders; biopsy procedures for tumors or cysts in the head, neck or mouth area; sleep apnea therapy involving airway reconstruction surgeries; and cosmetic procedures such as facelifts.
