Steps to take to start your career as a Recreation Director and other jobs like it
- Begin by working in various roles at a camp, such as a camp counselor, activity leader, or assistant director. Find camps that match your interests and passions as the attendees (most often kids) at these camps will feed off your energy and knowledge. While at the camps seek out opportunities to lead or coordinate activities. Demonstrating your ability to manage people and projects will be valuable in addition to showing you can navigate problems that come up with the attendees and where applicable, their parents.
- Consider pursuing a degree in fields like Recreation, Education, or Management. Some colleges offer specific programs in camp management or outdoor education. Obtain certifications that are relevant to camp management, such as First Aid/CPR, lifeguard training, or outdoor leadership certifications.
- To be a leader at a camp you’ll need a history of proven success in other roles within a camp. These roles are often filled from a pipeline of people who were counselors as teenagers. Get in early and keep building into more leadership type roles. Also be mindful to build your skill set focused around leadership, organization and communication. Learn to handle logistics, budgeting, and scheduling. Effective planning and multitasking are crucial. Enhance your ability to communicate clearly with staff, campers, and parents. Good interpersonal skills are essential for resolving conflicts and building a strong team.
- Attend industry conferences, workshops, and networking events to meet other camp directors and professionals. Networking can lead to mentorship opportunities and job leads. Become a member of professional organizations such as the American Camp Association (ACA) to stay updated on industry trends and standards.
Steps to Become a Camp Director
Start small and do your own thing, or you could start at a camp and work your way up. You need to have some camp experience. So, experience working with people, hiring, organizing, being a very organized person, being able to delegate, trust people, helps if you're an educator with a teaching credential. There's not a ton of requirements, anyone can be a camp director, but I think all those would really help you get a good starting basis.
What It’s Like
I'm here during the summertime from 6.30 C. o'clock to 6.30 C. o'clock C. o'clock C. 6 to 6 - that's the average day. What I'm doing at camp changes, depending on the day, helping the camp, setting up organizing trips, beach trips, Olympic week. I've done this for so many years, there's a lot of stuff that we are able to kind of, you know, plan for. So you kind of know what you're going to do, but you know the game, but you don't know what's going to happen in the game. So a lot of it's, you know, being able to react on the fly and to adapt to games to make it fun for the kids.
Pros and Cons of Career
I don't think I'd trade this job for anything. It's the best job in the world, being able to play with kids every day and seeing like just the joy of kids learning new skills. And even the teachable moments, right? You have kids that come in and they have issues too. And then being able to help a child through those issues and seeing the scene back on the field playing, it really fills my bucket. But the cons, I mean, I have three little kids now and have an amazing wife. And the cons are, you know, since I do work such work hours during the summer, I don't get to spend as much time with them.
Career Advice
Start as a counselor and work your way up as a director. I think the best way to kind of work your way up is work really hard and just ask, how can I help? Being only a seven week job. you might want to consider some sort of things to keep you busy during the off season. One thing that I do is I teach physical education for seven, and eighth grade PE. Just keeps me working with kids, learning new games, going to PE conferences,. You know, the responsible classroom, teaching games for understanding. So I think also, you know, being a teacher, it just helps prepare for running the camps in the summer.
