The Student and Community Relations at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director. About the Opportunity: The Assistant Director will plan, coordinate, and direct all building operations with WVU's Student Union (Mountainlair). The primary responsibilities of this position will be supervising and managing the operation of the Mountainlair's recreation center and night operations as well as assuming overall administrative responsibility in the Director's absence. Check out retirement health insurance benefits, retirement income, and FAQ's. * Wellness programs What you'll Do: * Plans, coordinates, and directs all building operations within the Mountainlair including Games Area, Information Center, and Night Operations; and assumes overall administrative responsibility in the Director's absence. Coordinates all housekeeping and maintenance within the facility. The scope of the position requires some evening and weekend work. * Assists the Director in developing an overall strategic plan for Mountainlair including: reviewing the mission statement; establishing specific performance objectives including short-and long-term goals; crafting a strategy to achieve the targeted objectives including an evaluation of internal and external strengths and weaknesses; implementing and executing the chosen strategy efficiently and effectively; and evaluating performance, reviewing the situation, and initiating correcting adjustments in the mission, the objectives, the strategy, or the implementation plan in light of actual experiences, changing conditions, new ideas, and new opportunities. * Plan, coordinate, and directs all building operations within the Mountainlair including Games Area, Information Center and Night Operations. Serves as the point of contact for housekeeping for all areas of the Mountainlair. * In conjunction with unit supervisors, develops short-and long-range goals and objectives for each unit, following the guidelines of the overall departmental goals. Monitors activities within each unit to ensure operation is profitable. Meets with unit supervisors to make operational adjustments as dictated by the business environment. * Directly supervises the Supervisor/Games Area, Supervisor/Information Center, and Supervisor/Night Operations by interviewing applicants and making the final hiring decisions; orienting new employees into their positions and to Mountainlair, assigning duties and responsibilities to employees; counseling, guiding, instructing, and coaching employees to effectively carry out their responsibilities; evaluating work performance; and responding to disciplinary problems by counseling subordinates and following through with progressive discipline and termination, as necessary. * Serves as the senior administrator in the Director's absence and is responsible for developing a board understanding of all internal operational areas and services, the budgeting process, personnel practices, and establishing effective campus liaisons to 304-293-1916 make effective operational decisions. * Serves as a member of the Director's Executive Management team along with the Office Administrator, Sr., and Business Manager to discuss overall operational concerns. Assists the Director in maintaining a coherent, consistent, and cooperative operation among all senior managers. * Reviews staffing needs with unit supervisors for each operational area under his/her supervision. Approves supervisory staff's final selection of applicants for vacancies. Assists supervisory personnel in conducting performance appraisals and resolving disciplinary issues. Coordinates the selection, training, and evaluation of student staff. * Assists employees in each operational area with the development of unit budgets. Assists in the evaluation of projected expenditures and revenues. Approves final unit budget request for submission to the Director. Monitors expenditures and income to ensure supervisor is operating within budgetary guidelines. * Assists with the coordination of Mountainlair events and activities with students (i.e. WVUp All Night), faculty, and staff. Advises customers regarding appropriate building usage and provides evaluative data relevant to event success. Maintains an open channel f communication with various campus constituents, including those units located within Mountainlair. Functions as the liaison with contracted operations and Arts & Entertainment to foster a cooperative spirit for events and services offered within Mountainlair. * Assists in the evaluation, development, and implementation of special projects or events impacting the entire Mountainlair, and possibly the University. * Responds to student and customer complaints, counsels' patrons concerning University and Mountainlair policies and regulations, and negotiates an equitable solution to problem situations. * Provides narrative and statistical reports to the Director, as requested. * Serves on special committees and boards, as requested. Attends seminars, conferences, and related educational opportunities to maintain currency on trends and developments within student union operations. * This position operates within the policies and procedures developed by the Board of Governors and the University. Within these guidelines, position will review and assist in establishing policies and procedures for the Mountainlair. Education: * Master's degree in student personnel, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: * A minimum of four (4) years: * Progressively responsible experience in large facility administration/operations, preferably in a student union environment or related facility of comparable size to WVU's student union, to include management and supervisory experience as well as experience with cash operations and managing budget. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: * Knowledge of management principles and practices, specifically in strategic planning and operational evaluation and control. * Knowledge of personnel principles and practices with the ability to apply student developmental theory as a supervisory skill. * Knowledge of the mission of an auxiliary enterprise * Knowledge of computer systems with the ability to operate a personal computer and knowledge of basic office software packages (i.e., word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications). Skills necessary to manage a small business (i.e., budgeting, accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, etc.) * Analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to evaluate successful implementation of goals and objectives. * Skills in assessment, planning, training, and evaluation. * Interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization and the public. * Leadership ability. Entrepreneurial skills with the ability to identify successful business opportunities, develop ideas into strategic plans, implement ideas, and evaluate results. * Oral and written communication skills necessary to negotiate resolutions to problem situations. * Ability to work some evening and weekends hours, as required.
