South Carolina Retirement Yes State Insurance Programs Yes Annual Leave Yes Sick Leave Yes Position Description Advertised Job Summary The Institute for Families in Society (IFS) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst/Cartographer to drive the continued growth, evolution, and adoption of our GIS strategy and platform in health policy research. Position requires use of GIS software, tools, and methods to generate maps and other visualization products (paper, image, pdf, poster, infographic, and web) and conduct routine spatial analyses based on predefined procedures. Position is responsible for IHPR's mapping product design and implementation and will work with Senior GIS staff to create conceptualized products and standardized mapping templates. Other software usages will include Adobe products (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop); programming languages (e.g., SAS, SQL, Python, JavaScript); and health-related research methods and standards (e.g., HIPAA) in a fast-paced, applied research environment to meet contract deliverables and goals. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a bachelor's degree and no prior work experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications * Master's degree * Experience with Esri GIS tools including ArcPro * 2+ years of health GIS experience; understanding of health and place concepts, using automation and scripting workflows. * Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., python, SQL, SAS) * Experience with spatial statistical tools and mapping output * Knowledge of Medicaid or other healthcare claims * Knowledge of web GIS (e.g., ArcGIS Online); data as a service, web application configuration, cloud infrastructure and architecture * Knowledge of public health concepts and methods. * Experience working with health-related datasets (Medicaid/Medicare, hospitalization data, cancer data, etc.) and mapping health data Knowledge/Skills/Abilities * Demonstrable experience with cartography and telling a story with maps, charts, and tables. * Demonstrable experience with data management emphasizing the ability to create and structure datasets to feed into mapping software. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to organize and present thoughts clearly and concisely. * Ability to proofread and correct own work and work of others with keen attention to detail. * Ability to connect projects and describe how they are related. * Must have curiosity and desire to explore health and social determinants data and its spatial relationships and outcomes. * High-level analytical and problem-solving skills and capacity for strategic thinking. * Ability to understand data and the other underlying trends and use that information to help craft narratives through visual tools.
