GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Brain Modulation Lab (Department of Neurosurgery, Massachusetts General Hospital) is a human systems neuroscience lab studying brain electrophysiology and behavior in patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy, movement disorders, and psychiatric disease. The goal of our work is to facilitate the development and optimization of electrical and biological brain modulation therapies, by filling critical gaps in our understanding of human brain function. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, and talented individual to assist in the implementation of cognitive tasks and the acquisition and management of neural and behavioral data. The Clinical Research Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the PI (Mark Richardson, MD PhD), lab co-director (Alan Bush, PhD), and other research scientists and will routinely interact with patients. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Administer cognitive and behavioral tasks to in-patients undergoing intracranial monitoring for epilepsy treatment. * Monitor patients and recordings daily to ensure a high-quality data collection. Monitoring on weekend days may be required but will be done on a rotating schedule. * Assist with experiment set-up, execution, and take-down and data collection in the operating room during electrode implantation surgery for treatment of movement and psychiatric disorders. * Recruit and screen patients for research studies over the telephone, and interview patients about their experiences participating in research. * Collect patient outcomes measures following surgery and develop and perform procedures for tracking surgical outcomes. * Process and manage acquired imaging, intracranial, and behavioral data using Excel, Matlab, Python, and standard neurological data processing software. Improve, debug, and modify pre-processing pipelines.. * Document and maintain specific protocol information and communications according to established guidelines. * Document research activities and maintain research databases. * Maintain confidential patient files including all correspondence, protected health information (PHI), raw data, and follow-up status of research study participants. * Assist with drafting essential study documents and preparing materials for IRB submissions. * Attend and prepare summaries of relevant clinical planning and lab meetings. * Purchase equipment and supplies and maintain communications with suppliers and purchasing departments. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: * Independence, problem-solving capabilities, and willingness and dedication to troubleshoot technical issues. * Programming ability in MATLAB and/or Python, or willingness to learn basic programming skills using free, online tutorials (will be recommended by lab personnel). * Computer skills including configuration of operating systems, word processing and spreadsheets. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with many different people including patients, doctors, nurses, grant administrators, project and program managers, and researchers. * Exceptional organizational skills and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadlines. * Willingness to learn the methods, materials, and equipment used in research activities. * Good command of English language, including basic medical and scientific terminology. * Desired: Familiarity with neuropsychiatric/neurocognitive testing platforms and concepts (e.g. LeadDBS, Psychtoolbox, FieldTrip, MNE). * Desired: Experience with instrumentation design and testing. * Desired: Working knowledge of data management concepts, HIPAA/patient data privacy regulations, Good Clinical Practice, and Human Subjects Protections requirements. * Desired: Experience in the development of standard operating procedures. Given the complexity of the work involved, a minimum commitment of two years is requested. EDUCATION: * Bachelor's degree required in a science or healthcare related field. EXPERIENCE: * New graduates with some relevant course/project work or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Clinical Research Coordinator I position outlined above. * Experience in behavioral testing, analytical skill, MATLAB and/or Python programming is desired. * BA/BS degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field is preferred. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: * Lab supply purchasing, documentation of purchase orders and invoices, and clinical trial billing and invoicing. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Duties will be primarily performed in a hospital inpatient, operative, clinic, dry laboratory, and office settings. Some responsibilities are able to be performed remotely.
