Other Conditions:
Extramural funds. Appointment to begin June 9, 2025, pending availability of funding. The initial appointment is scheduled to run until Spring 2026. Continuation is contingent upon project needs, satisfactory work performance, academic progress, and availability of funds.
Adaptation Metrics Graduate Research Assistant
This Graduate Assistant is funded by the City and County of Honolulu's Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency (CCSR). As the City moves forward with implementation of Climate Ready O'ahu (CRO), our island's climate adaptation strategy, tracking progress on adaptation actions and continuing to ensure we are meeting community adaptation needs is critical. Adaptive capacity, defined as the ability to adapt to climate change, is an important tool for understanding our progress. This GA will support the City in developing an Adaptive Capacity Index to provide the City with tools for measuring the success and identifying gaps in implementing CRO. Additionally, this project will help identify metrics for the City to publicly showcase progress on adaptation efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Work in collaboration with CCSR and the Department of Geography and Environment to advance project objectives;
* Research adaptation metrics and adaptive capacity;
* Identify quantitative metrics for measuring adaptive capacity using available data sets;
* Plan and implement a community outreach strategy to engage with community-based organizations and individuals to gauge sentiments on adaptive capacity;
* Create a GIS-based adaptive capacity index to show adaptive capacity in our communities;
* Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* Classified full-time (minimum 6 credits) graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa;
* Strong research, writing and interpersonal skills;
* Knowledge of and ability to use geospatial tools;
* Experience working with diverse populations;
* Dependable, organized and efficient;
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Qualifications
* One year experience in climate science, adaptation, mitigation, or closely related field.
* Some understanding of Native Hawaiian histories, cultures, and stewardship practices.
* Experienced in community engagement and outreach.
