Responsible for responding to emergency calls and providing basic life-saving emergency medical care to sick/injured persons in pre-hospital settings. This position will assess patients, determine proper care, and administer appropriate treatment while transporting to a hospital.
Salary dependent on certification level:
FF/EMT - B $ 50,463.00 - $ 83,263.95
FF/EMT - A $ 53,995.41 - $ 89,092.43
FF/EMT - I $ 57,775.09 - $ 95,328.90
FF/EMT - P $ 61,819.34 - $ 102,001.92
FF/EMT - CCP $ 66,146.70 - $ 109,142.05ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Responds to emergency calls and performs basic life support emergency medical services
* Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies; inspects and performs general maintenance tasks on ambulances and equipment for compliance with safety and sanitary policies
* Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports safety violations; takes appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission or exposure to bodily fluids
* Monitors inventory levels of departmental supplies; checks expiration of supplies; initiates orders for new and replacement materials
* Communicates with supervisors, employees, and all other appropriate parties to coordinate work activities, review status of work, review status of patients, exchange information, or resolve problems
* Engages in fire suppression in addition to response to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment is at risk
* Provides patients with emergency care by utilizing appropriate techniques and equipment
* Documents patient information and maintains confidentiality
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Provides information and education to the public on EMS, public safety and related topics
* Perform related duties as required
Education and Experience:
Education equivalent to a high school diploma and completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) training, supplemented by 2 years of experience and/or training in EMS field.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check. Must possess and maintain the following: Virginia driver's license; Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) certification; Emergency Vehicles Operator Course (EVOC) certification; Hazardous Materials Technician certification; Firefighter I & II; and CPR certification. Must successfully complete the following: Bloodborne Pathogen training; Personal Protective Equipment training; Respirator Protection training; and any occupational training as designated by the Director or in compliance with applicable laws. Must pass an NFPA 1582 physical examination prior to employment and annually or as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge and compliance of County, State and Federal laws, regulations, and protocols for providing emergency medical services
* Ability to operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools, and supplies.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment

* Willing to work overtime as required
* Ability to coordinate and maintains an effective relationship with other agencies
* Ability to complete and maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational records
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as heavy work. Tasks require frequent lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 125 pounds; requires walking, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling over terrain and buildings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Performs duties during emergencies, or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke. Will be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature, and noise extremes, bright/dim light, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic.
