This is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on:   10/11/24, 12/13/24, 2/13/25, 4/10/25, 6/12/25, 8/7/25, 10/9/25, 12/11/25 (final) Incumbents in this class supervise, plan, promote, organize, implement, and evaluate a wide range of inmate services including sports, games, handicrafts, educational resources, and video and reading materials at a detention or correctional facility.  Knowledge of * Principles and practices in administering inmate services including recreational, vocational, educational, and library services * Principles of organization, management, supervision, and training * Federal and State laws, guidelines, and regulations and departmental policies and procedures pertaining to inmate programs and activities * Behavioral characteristics of incarcerated populations and how to deal with them * Recreational equipment and facilities * Recreational, vocational, and educational program planning * Community, private, business, academic, public, and other resources to recruit volunteers and contributions Ability to * Plan, direct, motivate, train and supervise subordinates, and volunteers in providing inmate programs, including recreational, vocational, and educational programs * Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, community groups and inmates from a variety of social, cultural and economic backgrounds * Work under stressful, emotional, and confrontational situations requiring good judgement and self-control * Persuading and motivating people * Tolerate different values and beliefs * Tolerate working in a security setting * Prepare reports Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be the following: Either: 1. One year of full time paid experience performing the duties of Sheriff's Correctional Facility Recreation Specialist in Sacramento County service. Or: 2. Completion of all major course work from an accredited college or university required for a Bachelor's Degree or higher in recreation specializing in physical, developmental or social disabilities, or recreation for incarcerated populations. And One year of full time paid experience in developing, planning, organizing, publicizing and conducting recreational activities in a correctional facility. Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable.   Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements. Note: Experience above the minimum required may be substituted for the college education on a year-for-year basis. Note: All experience requirements are stated in terms of full-time experience; part-time experience is acceptable and is converted to full-time on the basis of: 173.6 hours = 21.7 days = 1 work month. Note: If the minimum qualifications include an educational or certificate/license requirement, applicants must submit proof of requirements with the application. Special Requirements Background/Criminal History: Appointees must pass a criminal history and background check to assure compliance with the California Penal Code. The conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment except if the individual has been granted a full and unconditional pardon for the felony. Hours of Work: Incumbents in this class must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays and weekends. While scoring the Supplemental Questionnaire, the candidate's application and/or attachments will not be reviewed, therefore, a candidate's responses to the questions should be accurate, thorough, detailed, and complete.   FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)   All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.   This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.   All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order.
