Job Description
We're seeking an International Student Advisor (ISA) to join the Cranwell International Center (CIC) team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. This position ensures the university complies with federal regulations for international student enrollment. The role involves managing a caseload of immigration requests, and advising international students, and requires expertise in interpreting and applying complex federal regulations and academic policies. The ISA advises international students on immigration, employment, taxes, and other government regulations, as well as personal and financial matters. The ISA also serves as a Designated School Official, responsible for processing and signing immigration documents for F-1 students, including employment authorizations, status changes, and transfers. Accurate record-keeping and maintaining immigration status records are crucial responsibilities. In additiona, the ISA will counsel students with potentially complex and highly nuanced personal situations in line with university policies and federal regulations with the goals of maintaining their legal non-immigrant status, retaining the student, and facilitating progress towards graduation. will also Anticipate and prevent problems impacting international student satisfaction
Here is what you need to know about the role:
1. You will join the Cranwell International Center. This department exists to articulate, advocate, and act in support of international students, amplifying their contributions to the Virginia Tech community and the advancement of the university as more globally oriented and internationally connected.
2. You will report to the Assistant Director for International Student Services. This position is a Regular, Academic Year, 100% Administrative Professional appointment.
3. You will be responsible for the immigration casework and advisement of international students. In addition, as needed and capacity allows, you will also have an advising caseload to support remotely across all Virginia Tech campuses.
4. You will have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.
5. You will be offered a salary range from $47,000 - $53,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!
Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience exercising discretion and independent judgment in making informed decisions in complex situations.
• Demonstrated experience working with complex organizational processes and procedures.
• Demonstrated aptitude for learning, interpreting, and disseminating highly technical information, regulations, and procedures.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience working with diverse populations within an intercultural context.
• Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
• Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying federal immigration laws and regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver professional presentations.
• Active involvement with NAFSA: Association of International Educators or other higher education associations.
• Demonstrated proficiency using the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
• Experience as an Alternate Responsible Officer.
• Experience with Banner or other SIS.
• Experience with Sunapsis or other student immigration management software.
