This part-time position is responsible for creating and conducting nature based educational programs for the public, leading naturalist program activities, and promoting awareness of city natural areas to program participants. Position will serve as a nature education resource for visitors, students, and community members.
Education and Interpretation:
* Lead a wide range of year-round naturalist programs (both outdoors and indoors) in parks and natural areas throughout Bloomington.
* Lead nature walks, hikes, and tours to educate the public about local flora, fauna, and ecosystems.
* Develop and present nature and environmental education programs for visiting school groups, community groups, and park visitors.
Public Engagement:
* Create fun, engaging, immersive and hands-on nature learning programs for participants.
* Serve as a resource for visitors, answering questions about Bloomington's natural areas.
* Participate in events and programs such as the Bloomington Farmers Market to bring awareness of programs and Natural Resources in Bloomington.
* Foster a sense of stewardship by promoting sustainable practices in Natural Resources.
Administrative Tasks:
* Maintain records of programs, activities, and field observations.
* Lead marketing and social media presence for Naturalist programs.
* Management of the recreational software related to naturalist program registrations.
* Administer Agreements related to contracted naturalists for some programs.
Required Qualifications:
* Experience in environmental education or interpretation.
* Strong knowledge of local ecosystems, plants, and wildlife.
* Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
* Highly motivated by helping others learn about nature and the environment.
* Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field.
Work Environment:
* Bloomington's diverse natural areas.
* Interaction with diverse groups, including children, educators, and nature enthusiasts.
* Physical activity, including hiking and fieldwork.
This position is scheduled for 16-18 hours per week on average year-round. Estimated starting range is $21-$23/hour. Most programs take place on weekends, with other work occurring weekdays with a flexible schedule.
