Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
The Library Specialist, Cataloging, supports the Collections and Discovery team by ensuring library resources are accurately cataloged and maintained for optimal discoverability in the online catalog. Working under the guidance of the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, this position is responsible for updating and maintaining bibliographic records, performing minor repairs on library materials, and assisting in deaccession projects. The Library Specialist will also aid with acquisitions tracking, maintain detailed project records, and cross-train in various technical services functions, thereby contributing to the library's commitment to quality service and resource accessibility.
What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities:
* Cataloging and Metadata Maintenance: Enter, edit, and maintain bibliographic data in the integrated library system to ensure accurate cataloging and easy discoverability of library materials. Verify data accuracy, correct errors, and update catalog records as necessary using MARC records and Library of Congress classification systems.
* Deaccessioning and Collection Management: Assisting in the deaccessioning of qualified library resources, including selection, removal, and processing of materials. Ensure deaccessioned items are documented and properly updated in the library system for accurate inventory.
* Project Tracking and Reporting: Track progress on cataloging and deaccession projects, ensuring timelines and project goals are met. Maintain detailed records and provide regular updates on acquisitions, cataloging, and deaccession status to support reporting requirements.
* Cross-Training and Support for Technical Services: Assist with other technical services functions as needed, including acquisitions, processing and ILL tasks. Provide backup support for various library operations to maintain workflow consistency and service quality.
* Collection Maintenance and Repair: Perform minor repairs on books, journals, and other materials (e.g., spine repair, page tipping) to extend the life of physical resources.· Assist in organizing and shelving cataloged materials to maintain an orderly and accessible collection.

Knowledge:
* Complex library issues and procedures such as cataloging, name authority maintenance, and deaccession procedures
* Basic library organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
* Automated library functions
* Use of the library online system (SirsiDynix) and national bibliographic utility (OCLC)
* LC classification system and LC subject heading list
* Library principles, practices, and terminology
Skills:
* Ability to enter and edit data with attention to detail
* Interpreting policies
* Working with a varying population
* Using relevant automated database systems
* Ability to work well with others and learn new skills
* Book repair techniques
* Maintaining positive customer service relationships
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to alternate between standing and sitting for extended periods, perform frequent repetitive motions (such as keyboarding and sorting), and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Regular movement within library or storage areas may also be needed to manage and maintain collections.
Job Conditions:
This position operates primarily in an indoor office environment within the library and requires extensive computer use. The role may involve regular movement between library buildings and areas to support cataloging and collection maintenance tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
* A high school diploma combined with three to five years of experience in an academic library, or a mix of college credits and library experience will be considered.
* Two to five years of experience in an academic library.

Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of college credits and library experience.
* Experience with Integrated Library Systems (ILS), particularly SirsiDynix, and familiarity with OCLC for cataloging and resource management.
* Knowledge of MARC Records and Metadata Standards, including proficiency in Library of Congress (LC) classification and subject headings.
