Videos Help Duties As a Research Physical Scientist within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: * Develop research proposals and operating budgets. * Manage and conduct basic or applied research in the physical sciences. * Manage budgets and other administrative activities that support the incumbent's research. * Generate scientific results that are of benefit to the mission of the USGS. * Instruct and train other scientific and technical personnel assigned to assist in the incumbent's investigations. * Serve as a technical advisor to other USGS scientists and peers within the planetary science community, including federal agencies and academia, on matters pertaining to their special knowledge. * Document the findings of the incumbent's research, publish findings in peer-reviewed publications, and present findings in scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings. Physical Demands and Work Environment The work takes place mostly in an office or laboratory setting. Work is largely sedentary. Must be able to spend lengthy periods working at a computer terminal. No other special physical effort is required. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) In addition to the basic education requirement listed above, applicants must also have one year of research experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service as principal investigator or co-investigator of a federal, competitively funded research project to characterize the physical or chemical composition of planetary surfaces, with specialization in the development of hardware instrumentation to collect observations of planetary surfaces, or development of data analysis software and techniques for processing such observations. Such experience typically includes: Serving as an independent researcher conceiving, formulating, gaining funding for, and conducting research in planetary science; independently conducting assessments of mineral or volatile resources or of geologic hazards; working closely with Federal agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and private industry; being the lead author on reports, publications, scientific journal articles, and/or other products of considerable importance to the research situation; attending scientific and interagency meetings to present research results and exchange information within the scientific community; reviewing manuscripts and proposals of other scientists; working directly and responsibly with scientists of other federal and state agencies and universities on technical issues related to the research assignment; and mentoring less experienced scientists in the proposal and execution of federally funded research.
