The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Homer!
What you will be doing:
This newly created seasonal position (7-8 months for a 3-year project) is working in a Division of Sport Fish area management team based out of the Homer office. This dynamic position will be primarily responsible for leading up to 4 fish and wildlife technicians with a Chinook salmon marine survival project on the Anchor River. Duties will include operating a rotary screw trap to capture smolt, PIT tagging smolt, collecting biological data from captured fish, conducting mark/recapture experiments to estimate smolt abundance, and monitoring the return of adult tagged fish using PIT arrays within underwater video weirs.

This unique research-based position will be a part of cohesive sport fish management group that oversees all of the monitoring and management of sport fisheries in the Homer area. This position will be primarily working on large-scale Chinook salmon marine survival study which will provide better information on the current poor productivity of Cook Inlet Chinook salmon. The information generated from this project will directly support the mission of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish to protect, maintain, and improve Alaska's sport fisheries. Joining the Homer Sport Fish group in this seasonal biologist position is a great opportunity to be exposed to both research and management of some of the most popular sport fisheries in Southcentral Alaska. We are a large group of 3 biologists and up to 10 fish and wildlife technicians that are actively involved with a variety of fisheries for salmon, shellfish, and groundfish. The incumbent will potentially assist with other area projects including razor clam abundance surveys, Chinook and coho salmon escapement monitoring, and a Chinook salmon supplementation program. Many of our seasonal staff have advanced in their careers to permanent positions within the department after exposure to our projects.
The working conditions you can expect:
The duties of this position will be based in the Homer office and will require travel in a state vehicle to the Anchor River field site which is approximately 20 miles from the office. The field site is road accessible and is within a state park. The field camp includes small "dry" cabins that serve as housing for project technicians.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities:
* Experience with capturing, handling, and tagging both juvenile and adult salmon. Experience with operation with juvenile fish traps, weirs, and seines.
* Ability to assist project biologists with development of project objectives, drafting operational plans and reports, and leading and training technicians with field activities.
* Ability to effectively communicate with crew, supervisors, and the public while working independently and in small groups.
* High level of proficiency with data management and analyses including the use of Excel, Access, and R statistical software.

Special Note:

* This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
* at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
* at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
