Position Overview: The successful candidate will design and evaluate battery materials and technologies relating to solid-state energy storage devices, and propose and execute on solutions to broaden dry coated electrode performance specifications. The energy storage devices include ceramics, sulfides and polymers based electrolytes for lithium metal containing batteries. In addition, there is the opportunity to investigate energy storage materials beyond the aforementioned systems. The candidate will work in a cross-functional team environment to ensure successful transitions of knowledge in materials and electrochemical properties relationship for optimal electrode performance towards production readiness. The candidate will be responsible for development new dry electrode system based on solid-state materials knowledge and research in advanced lithium based batteries. This position demands nearly 100% hands-on execution in the lab/factory with intimate knowledge in analytical equipment and materials handling knowledge. Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions) : Conduct systematic scientific and industrial development of various solid-state electrolyte materials with emphasis on how materials/process impact cell electrochemical performance Create experimental test plans and execute those experiments to select and characterize fundamental energy storage materials performance Analyze the performance of individual materials and interactions between materials, and take independent steps to improve performance to widen device application Work in laboratory environment with hands-on operation in powder processing equipment and analytical tools such as CV, SEM, TGA, FTIR, DSC, optical microscope, data logger, thermal sensing devices, voltmeter, oscilloscope, etc. Produce detailed data analyses and experimental reports, documenting the experiments and the results collected Present data in a cohesive and competent fashion to cross-functional teams Make practical recommendations on new/alternative materials and technologies that can be evaluated Attend academic conferences and seminars to stay current on energy storage technologies Read and review technology proceedings and patents to establish impetus for proposed solutions and to project future energy storage trends Establish in-depth knowledge of materials systems and work closely with cross-functional teams to transition materials and key learnings to pilot-scale development Participate in cross-functional team supporting the manufacturing and commercialization of next generation products Other duties as assigned. Supervision Received: Supervision is provided by the department Manager; position requires ability to perform with minimal supervision. Supervision Exercised: No direct reports. Qualifications & Skills: Education: MS degree or higher in Materials Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Materials Science & Engineering Preferred: Ph.D. in materials science with strong emphasis in solid-state lithium based batteries Experience: - Two years experience in designing and testing of materials relating to solid-state energy storage device, intimate exposure to electrode fabrication and cell assembly in various form factors - Demonstrable experience in design and testing of solid-state electrodes Skills: - Strong scientific background with autonomous laboratory skills required - Broad exposure to energy storage materials required - Experience in the programming and operating energy storage analytical equipment - Solid understanding of a range of energy storage technologies - Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and independently execute to those priorities - Self-motivated with hands-on skills, abilities and bias are a must - Team oriented attitude required - Ability to travel as required.
