FTE: 1.0, Shift: Day/Evening, Schedule: Variable Position Summary Translates and interprets foreign languages to and from English to patients, family, visitors, medical and hospital staff. Provides knowledge of principles of English and foreign language grammar, spelling and punctuation, foreign cultures, and commonly and vernacularly used medical terminology. Speaks, reads and writes in English and one or more foreign languages. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Promotes the wellbeing of patients being registered/admitted in a prompt, orderly manner. 2. Performs diversified tasks and duties associated with inpatient admissions, Emergency Department registration, cashiering, and communications. Maintains accurate patient account information. Verifies insurance, discusses financial responsibility with patients and collects payment. 3. Interprets oral messages, reads/translates written information, messages, questions and explanations from English to a foreign language and vice versa, serving patients, family, visitors, medical and hospital staff, and general public. 4. Interprets/translates messages into specified language using the appropriate (oral) style i.e.; consecutively, simultaneously or paraphrase, maintaining message content, context and style as much as applicable to the situation. 5. Interprets/translates, proofreads, edits and revises written materials as requested, including but not limited to consents, physical history, discharge instructions, education material, correspondence, and legal and medical material. 6. Refers to reference materials, such as dictionaries, manuals, journals, encyclopedias and Internet sites as needed to conduct research and ensure accuracy. 7. Identifies, resolves and communicates conflicts related to the meaning of words, concepts, practices or behaviors or cultures. Checks translations of technical terms and terminology to ensure accuracy and consistency throughout translation revisions. 8. Prioritizes and organize workload and follow internal communication plan to complete assignments. Works as a liaison with other departments, nursing units, agencies and/or medical offices to meet interpreting/translation needs. 9. Explains hospital policies, procedures and protocol to patients and families. Provides general information to the public, agendas, meetings, or community events. 10. Follows ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information and impartiality. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent required. Additional education of English and other foreign language study and/or cultural programs preferred. Experience: Fluency in English and at least one other foreign language required. Medical office experience preferred. Licenses/Certificates/Registration: Medical interpreter certification preferred. Pay and Benefit Expectations We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $25.89 - $35.52 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will be reflective of the appropriate step on the pay scale to which the applicant's years of experience align.
