We seek a specialist in jazz performance, with additional experience and expertise in one or more of the following: music of the African diaspora; LatinX musics; Music Technology & Business; Popular music idioms. We expect the candidate's scholarly focus to complement the offerings of our current faculty and University curriculum. BACKGROUND Trinity University (http://www.trinity.edu) is a secular, independent, private institution, founded in 1869. Trinity offers high-quality major degrees and pre-professional programs as represented by the four schools (STEM, Arts & Humanities, Social Science and Civic Engagement, and Business) to approximately 2500 undergraduate students from the U.S. and more than 45 foreign countries. The Music Department operates within the context and mission of Trinity's commitment to an undergraduate education based on the foundation of a Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum. The Instructional staff consists of 11 Full-Time tenure-track faculty and a full component of Part-Time faculty covering private studio lessons and adjunct teaching. The department offers, in addition to class and performance opportunities to all students irrespective of one's major, a minor in music, Bachelor of Arts in Music, and Bachelor of Music degree. At the bachelor's degree level, a student may select composition, performance, or pre-certification in music education as a concentration. Performing ensembles include two SATB choral groups, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. Students can also perform in smaller groups such as Handbell Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, jazz combos, string quartet, and a variety of chamber wind ensembles. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The primary responsibility for the person in this position is directing the Jazz Ensemble. Related to the jazz performance focus, the candidate will provide instruction in improvisation and possibly teach private lessons and/or a course in Jazz History. To diversify and enhance our curricular offerings we are seeking the candidate to also teach in a related field of cultural or performance studies. Our current offerings in this area are: African-American Music, Introduction to Film Music, Music Cultures of the World. The candidate may offer other options related to music technology, popular music idioms, or LatinX musics. The additional teaching responsibilities may also be applied to teaching a First-Year Experience course. APPOINTMENT DETAILS This position will be a 9-month appointment (9- or 12-month disbursement) starting August 2025, with a standard pre-tenure probationary period. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION Required: Master of Music Degree EXPERIENCE Required: * Professionally acknowledged public performance experience * Minimum of three years of teaching experience Preferred: * Teaching experience at the university level LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES * Familiarity with large jazz ensemble ("big-band") repertoire, rehearsal strategies, concert planning, recruitment and retention, and historically grounded performance practices. * Active Performance skills in jazz and related music genres * Research or practical performance experience in one or more of the following: music of the African diaspora; LatinX musics; Music Technology & Business; Popular music idioms. * Ability to be a communicative, supportive, collaborative colleague * Understanding and commitment to musical instruction within the context of the liberal arts mission of Trinity University HOW TO APPLY For internal applicants, please apply through Workday using the 'Jobs Hub' application, see instructions provided here.
