Function

This position is responsible to repair/correct minor maintenance problems and conduct weekly inspections of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office correctional facilities
Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Commander of Operations and is accountable for the use of delegated authority.
Pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

Examples of Work

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions
  • Report all maintenance problems and reports them to the Commander of Operations
  • Issues janitorial supplies for HCJ and HCCC
  • Documents supply requisitions and work order requests
  • Inspects building, equipment and systems for any issues
  • Ensures all maintenance issues are addressed in a timely manner
  • Maintains up to date files to track maintenance issues
  • Performs routine maintenance on building systems
  • Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities
  • Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance
  • Contacts outside repair agencies as needed
  • Inspects completed maintenance and security projects to ensure that they meet the needs of the Office
  • Makes minor repairs
  • Conducts a monthly inventory of tools
  • Dependable and meets acceptable attendance requirements at all times
  • Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
  • Disseminates information as it is given by the Department’s Administration

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of procedures for reporting maintenance problems to the proper city department (i.e. General Services)
  • Ability to make minor repairs/adjustments to facility equipment (i.e. cell bars, light fixtures, etc.)
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and comprehend laws, ordinances and orders
  • Maintain composure under adverse conditions such as public harassment, critical injuries, and death
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and citizens from a variety of racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Present evidence in court effectively; skillful in observation and remembering details

  • Perform life-saving and rescue procedures

  • Give and follow commands, following through when needed
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year experience in the corrections field. Maintenance experience preferred (i.e. carpentry, electrical, locksmith). Journeyman Electrician certification is mandated.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD

Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS
Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs.; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires operation of standard office equipment.
