Job Description Summary The Prosthetist Orthotist Resident will provide care to patients with limb loss or disability to the limbs or spine by fitting and preparing devices known as prostheses and orthoses. They will work together with Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists under the direction and in consultation with a physician. The Prosthetist Orthotist Resident will demonstrate Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Core Attributes: Communication, Accountability, Flexibility/Adaptability, Judgment/Problem Solving, Customer Service and Core Values (Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Collaboration, and Commitment to Excellence) while fulfilling job duties. Job Description The Prosthetist Orthotist Resident will: Examines and evaluates patient's orthotic needs in relation to disease entity and functional loss. Examines and evaluates patients' prosthetic needs and designs the prosthesis accordingly. Formulates design of the orthosis or prosthesis including selecting materials, making case measurements, and designing model modifications and layouts. Performs fitting, including static and dynamic alignments. Evaluates prosthesis or orthosis on patient and makes adjustments to ensure proper fit, function, cosmesis and quality of work. Instructs patients and family in prosthesis or orthosis use and care. Maintains patient records and progress notes. Evaluates patient progress and maintains patient records. Monitors the work of technicians in activities related to the development of prostheses and orthoses. Presents four case presentations and participates in the review of four peer journal articles in the course of the residency cycle. Completes a “Resident Directed Study” approved by the Residency Director. Maintains a log of patient statistics for completion of NCOPE Residency Performance evaluation and completes all necessary NCOPE required documents in a timely manner. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Reporting Relationships Reports directly to the Manager, Clinical Operations – P&O Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Master’s Degree from a CAAHEP Accredited Orthotist/Prosthetist Education Program. Analytical ability to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems. Interpersonal skills to communicate with patients and interdisciplinary team regarding fabrication of equipment. Demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent and geriatric patients. Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to ensure patient needs are met. Able to remain current on new technology in the field of orthotics. Ability to move casts. Working Conditions Normal patient care environment with exposure to dust, loud noises, offensive odors, and fumes. Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients. May include exposure to community, home, work, school and off-site clinic settings.
