The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Creates systems that manipulate and control light. Works on a wide range of applications, from designing lenses for cameras to developing cutting-edge optical technologies for various industries, including telecommunications, healthcare, and aerospace. Ensures optical systems meet specific performance and quality standards.
Schedule 8:30 AM-5:30 PM Responsibilities POSITION SUMMARY The Experimental Division is seeking an early-career Optical Engineer to help design, build, and conduct laboratory experiments exploring laser-material interactions. The innovative and resourceful candidate that is hired will perform programmatic research and development using wide range of targets, lasers, and optical diagnostics to conduct these experiments. RESPONSIBLITIES: Support the operation of existing and newly acquired equipment and instrumentation for laser physics experiments Design, build, and field optical set-ups that include lasers, vacuum systems, targets, and interferometric diagnostics Work in an environment with a visible and audible laser amplifier operating at both single shot and constant 10Hz rep rates. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor┐s Degree in Optics US Citizenship Required ESESSENTIAL SKILLS: Experience with optical systems Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software operation Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and navigate stairs/ladders Excellent verbal and written communication Work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary team Programming experience PREFERRED SKILLS Experience with electrical power, controls, and vacuum systems Experience with programming language such as Python or C++ Technical writing experience The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University's mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create - and Make the World Ever Better.
